Video: “Seething” United legend sees red after “overstepping the mark” before team’s last-gasp heroics – report

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was sent off for Plymouth Argyle on Saturday despite his side finally finding a late winner versus Blackburn Rovers.

The United legend took over the reins of the club this summer after a disastrous spell at Birmingham City last year.

The 38 year old has not had the easiest of times in club management with his Derby County side facing massive points deductions and a hostile environment at Birmingham.

He did not get off to the best of starts at his new side either as they lost 4-0 to Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of the Championship season and failed to win any of their first four league matches.

Nonetheless, Rooney’s side have undergone a bit of a revival lately, winning three out of their last five matches against Sunderland, Luton Town and Blackburn.

The Pilgrims went ahead early through Michael Obafemi but conceded a late equaliser in the 86th minute of action.

According to The Mirror however, “Plymouth were adamant that the goal shouldn’t have stood, vehemently appealing for a foul in the build-up. Rooney was seething on the touchline, making his feelings clear to fourth official Jacob Miles.”

“Referee James Linington felt that the former England captain had overstepped the mark and showed Rooney a red card, sending him to the stands for the nail-biting closing stages of the Championship encounter.”

Rooney then made his way down the Home Park tunnel but would be in much greater spirits ten minutes later when Morgan Whittaker netted a 97th minute winner, which saw Rooney return to the pitch and celebrate with his players.

United’s all-time top goalscorer was no stranger to a red card in his playing days, and has now picked up the first of his managerial career.

The win took Plymouth to 14th in the table, where they sit five points behind the playoff places in an incredibly tight Championship division.

Plymouth Argyle’s assistant head coach, Pete Shuttleworth, was quick to defend Rooney’s reaction claiming, “Wayne’s still passionate. He has got that passion. We were disappointed there wasn’t a foul given for the foul on Ryan Hardie leading up to the goal.”

Rooney’s side will next be in action when they travel to Cardiff City on Saturday the 19th after the conclusion of the international break.
