Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood got off the mark as he opened his account for Marseille in sensational fashion during their Ligue 1 opening match against Brest.
Greenwood joined Marseille on a permanent deal earlier this summer as the first signing of the Roberto De Zerbi area, who also signed for the club after leaving Brighton and Hove Albion.
United reached an agreement with Marseille at around the £26.6m (€31.6m) mark for the 22-year-old, who put pen to paper on a five-year deal.
The Red Devils also inserted a significant sell-on clause into the deal, which is thought to be between 40 and 50 per cent.
Greenwood only needed three minutes to open his Marseille account, as he embarked on a brilliant run down the right flank before slotting the ball low into the bottom corner.

28 minutes later, the Englishman grabbed his second and Marseille’s third, this time from the penalty spot.

De Zerbi started Greenwood on the right wing of a 4-2-3-1 formation.
The 22-year-old’s double vs. Brest will undoubtedly give the forward a lot of confidence as he seeks to settle into his new life in France.
All eyes have been on him since he completed his switch to Marseille.
The player – who spent last season out on loan at Getafe – saw his move to The Stade Vélodrome met with opposition from some sections of the club’s fanbase and also outsiders.
Mayor of Marseille, Benoit Payan vehemently opposed Greenwood’s signing, reiterating that he did not want the side “shamed by someone who hits his wife.”
Greenwood was charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault, but denied any wrongdoing. He was also arrested for a breach of his bail conditions on the same day. In February 2023, all charges against the Carrington academy graduate were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service following the withdrawal of material witnesses.
He arrived at United aged nine and came up through the ranks to make his senior debut for the Red Devils in March 2019.
