United’s sensational deal for teen prodigy “would not have occurred” before INEOS – The Athletic

Manchester United are working to complete the signing of wonderkid Chido Obi-Martin from Arsenal.

For the past few seasons, strikers have been in short supply at United, with Rasmus Hojlund being the club’s only natural forward last term due to Anthony Martial’s ongoing injury problems.

While Joshua Zirkzee has since been signed in the ongoing transfer window, Hojlund’s injury setback means that United’s striker options are once again whittled down to one player.

Although the likes of Ivan Toney have emerged as potential targets, United are also aware of the importance of signing young talents who can help to build the squad for years to come.

The Athletic today have provided an update on United’s prospective deal to sign Obi-Martin.

“They have agreed personal terms with the player before looking to settle on a compensation fee with Arsenal, a situation that would not have occurred under the previous regime,” the report reads, acknowledging the difference in transfer approach adopted by the club following the arrival of INEOS.

“United’s past approach at academy level meant waiting for club-to-club agreements and they often shied away from potentially difficult signings,” the article continues.

It has previously been reported that Obi-Martin has already passed a medical at Old Trafford ahead of the switch.

Although the youngster is expected to arrive at United’s youth academy rather than the first team, he will come into contact with some of the elite talent at the club as they intermingle at Carrington. While construction is under way, the gym connects the first-team and academy dressing rooms, The Athletic mentions, meaning that there is an increased chance of interaction between players from different squads.

There has even been a report from Fabrizio Romano stating that United have promised Obi-Martin he will be the “third striker” this season and could potentially play some senior games.

In theory he might be competing with Ethan Wheatley in that respect. Reports state that the young forward will not be sent out on loan and the club’s official website lists Wheatley as a first team squad member.

By pursuing the likes of Obi-Martin, United are certainly working to expand and improve their crop of young talent, who can help to ensure a bright future in the years to come.
