Toby Collyer will remain at Old Trafford this season with the 20-year-old midfielder set to available for both the Manchester United “U21s and senior squad”, according to a report.

Jaque Talbot (Football Transfers) reveals there are “no plans” to send Collyer out on loan after the youngster enjoyed an impressive pre-season campaign for the Red Devils.

Talbot also reveals Harry Amass will remain at Old Trafford in a similar capacity to Collyer but this had been established earlier this summer.

The left-back, who started every pre-season game in America, only turned 17 in March and his progress will be better developed in-house.

Collyer, by comparison, turns 21 in five months and has already developed a level of physicality which makes him well-suited to the rigours of senior football.

The midfielder, who joined United from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago, is a willing runner who possesses excellent defensive awareness and tactical intelligence. He is strong in duels and his work-rate is likely to appeal to a manager who has made dominating transitions a key part of his vision for United.

Ten Hag’s midfield unit is the main area of concern heading into the final few weeks of the transfer window.

A centre-back (Leny Yoro) and centre-forward (Joshua Zirzkee) were signed earlier in the summer with another two defenders (Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui) set to be signed imminently. A central midfielder is as essential to United’s fortunes this season, however.

Sofyan Amrabat departed the club following the end of his loan deal while Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen have both been strongly linked with their own respective exits from Old Trafford. Casemiro looks set to remain, given interest from the Saudi Pro League has not materialised in how the club may have hoped, and Kobbie Mainoo will retain his key role in midfield, despite only turning 19 in April.

It’s clear, therefore, that more midfielders are needed to buttress this area of the pitch. A pursuit of PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte has, so far, proved unfruitful, but there is likely to be hope amongst United executives that the French club compromise on their demands for the Uruguayan as the September 1 deadline draws closer.

But, even with the potential signing of Ugarte, there will be space for another midfielder.

Which is why United are likely to have made the decision that Collyer will remain at Old Trafford this season, rather than heading out on loan for more regular gametime elsewhere, as these minutes will be available in the first-team under a manager who has constantly shown his willingness to trust young players.
