A lot was expected from Antony when Manchester United decided to spend €95 million to land the Brazilian winger on the insistence of manager Erik ten Hag.
A debut goal against Arsenal and a run of scoring in three successive league games meant he had begun repaying the faith put on him.
The rest of his debut campaign was a mixed bag but he did score to knock out Barcelona from the Europa League, a goal which earned him the club’s goal of the season award.
The former Ajax ace was expected to scale greater heights in his sophomore campaign but all those hopes were dashed as the Brazil international managed only a solitary league goal in the whole of the campaign.
Antony’s struggles
He struggled on the pitch and was mired in controversy off it and his first team chances slowly started drying up following Amad Diallo’s emergence.
He was linked with a move away this summer but Ten Hag blocked his exit on deadline day but with the 24-year-old receiving only one minute of game-time so far this campaign, it is clear he has fallen way down the pecking order.
Newcastle were said to be eyeing a surprise January swoop for him but as per The Sun, the player does not want to wait at Old Trafford for that long and is eyeing a loan exit in September with the Turkish window still open.
Former United boss Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce are in pole position to land Antony on a temporary basis while there is also interest from former outfit Ajax and Saudi Pro League sides.
“MANCHESTER UNITED flop Antony is pushing for a loan move away from Old Trafford and may have played his last game for the club. SunSport can reveal that Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce remain in pole position to land the Brazilian winger.
“But Antony’s former club Ajax are also monitoring the situation – as well as teams in Spain, France and Saudi Arabia. The player has told Man Utd he wants out and the club are believed to be keen to push through a loan deal.”
Fenerbahce want Antony
The Red Devils have until Friday, when the Turkish window closes, to agree a deal with Fener. A permanent exit is unlikely to be realised until next summer.
The report does not make clear how much of his wages will be covered in case a deal is agreed while the player’s agent has constantly denied rumours linking his client with an exit.
With Alejandro Garnacho excelling on the right and Diallo impressing the manager, the former Sao Paulo star will find regular starts hard to come by.
His manager still has faith in him but with INEOS keen to get rid, Antony’s time at the club is likely to end soon if not now.
