United “unlikely” to add to key position this summer with funds required elsewhere – Sky Sports

Manchester United entered the summer transfer market in desperate need to bolster the attacking options in a squad which comfortably finished the lowest scorers in the top eight of the Premier League last season.

A paltry 57 goals from 38 games saw the Red Devils finish with a dismal goal difference of minus given they conceded 58 in the other direction.

Dutch international Joshua Zirkzee joined Erik ten Hag’s ranks in the early weeks of the window to try and improve the situation, and is in line to make his Premier League debut this week.

It was believed Ten Hag was hoping for further additions in striking areas but that now appears “unlikely” with other areas of the field taking priority.

Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth confirmed the news on his X page, although he did note a player United still have interest in in that position.

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin one of number of forwards discussed by Manchester United in this transfer window. As it stands, not a priority position & United unlikely to reinforce in that area unless there are sales. Calvert-Lewin into final year of contract. #MUFC #EFC

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the name mentioned with United remaining open to a late deal should they offload some players.

The Everton striker is entering the final year of his contract at Goodison Park and a cut price deal could be struck if United raise the relevant funds.

No further signings would leave Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund carrying the load for United up top and both will be desperate for a strong campaigns.

Hojlund finished last year on double figures in the Premier League and will no doubt be eyeing an improvement on those numbers this season.

Zirkzee is entering his maiden season in England and is set to start the campaign ahead of Hojlund, given the Danish international’s injury.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Amad Diallo and Jadon Sancho all remain at the club and will be expected to contribute to the goals tally in and around the two natural centre-forwards.

Ten Hag will be aware of the need to start well this year and his side have the perfect opportunity to do just that as they welcome Fulham to Old Trafford for league’s curtain raiser on Friday night.
