United to get second bite at £68m cherry as fantastic news emerges on talented midfielder – report

The £68m release clause of Crystal Palace star and reported Manchester United target Eberechi Eze will re-activate next year.

During the summer transfer window, Eze was linked to United and was mentioned to be on the club’s list of midfield reinforcements.

Eze enjoyed a superb 2023/24 campaign, in which he plundered an impressive 11 goals and four assists in 27 Premier League matches. He further enhanced his reputation at Euro 2024, where he featured in three of England’s seven matches.

His electric form for the Eagles alerted a number of top Premier League sides to his availability including United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

However, a big move for Eze never materialised and he ended up staying at Palace.

According to The Daily Mail, the midfielder’s expired release clause worth £68million will re-activate next year, giving suitors like United another chance to potentially land him and add quality in the middle of the park.

The newspaper explains, “Mail Sport revealed in June that the England international had the buy-out price – made up of an initial £60million plus a further £8m in add-ons – included in the three-and-a-half year contract he signed with the Selhurst Park club last November.”

“But following a summer of uncertainty surrounding Eze’s future amid initial interest from England’s top clubs, the clause elapsed ahead of the Premier League campaign as the attacker remained at Selhurst Park.”

“But we can now disclose that the release clause is due to reopen at the end of the season which will spark further speculation over his future at Palace. It is understood the price of the clause will remain the same.”

The Mail add that Palace could even be open to negotiating a lower fee for Olise despite the fixed price on his current terms.

It’s understood that the Selhurst Park outfit have accepted that Eze continues to be on the radar of some of the biggest teams in Europe and as such, they could accept a lower sum with a view to “facilitating the player’s ambition” to seek a new adventure.

Palace chairman Steve Parish recently admitted that he was astounded no club seriously came in for Eze.

Parish said, “I was really worried from a club point of view of losing Michael [Olise] and Ebbs [Eze] in the same window and we didn’t have in Ebbs the interest that I thought we would have.”

“I was astounded. Genuinely astounded. I mean, the guy’s just an outstanding footballer, an outstanding person.”

Eze has already found the back of the net once this term and he’s certainly a player United should keep close tabs on.
