United star announces his retirement from international football in emotional statement

Manchester United defender and Northern Ireland legend Jonny Evans has announced his retirement from international football.

Evans had an outstanding career with Northern Ireland, which saw him win an impressive 107 caps over an 18-year period.

Only three men and two women – Steven Davis, Julie Nelson, Pat Jennings, Ashley Hutton and Aaron Hughes – have lined up more times for Northern Ireland than Evans.

The highlight of Evans’ distinguished career with his country were his brilliant performances in the Euro 2016 finals.

The veteran defender won his first cap in September 2006. He was 18 at the time when Lawrie Sanchez selected him at left-back in a 3-2 victory over Spain at Windsor Park.

Evans’ decision to retire comes a day before Michael O’Neill was set to announce his squad for September’s Nations League matches against Luxembourg and Bulgaria.

The 36-year-old explained in a statement, “After much thought and consideration, and after 18 years, I feel like now is the right time to retire from international football. From my debut in 2006, when we defeated Spain, to my last game in June 2024, it has been a privilege.”

“Putting on the green shirt 107 times and representing the people of Northern Ireland has been my biggest honour. You, the fans, are simply the greatest in the world. I have been so proud to represent each and every one of you on the pitch.”

“Your unwavering support and love has never gone unnoticed and I will miss those nights together.”

He also thanked his loved ones and former managers he worked under in his wide-ranging statement.

Northern Ireland boss O’Neill said, “Managing Jonny has been an absolute privilege. He is one of our greatest players as his 107 international caps clearly shows.”

“Jonny always showed great leadership but also great humility and always looked out for the rest of the squad. He always loved playing for his country and we will miss his quality and presence in the games ahead.”

“He has achieved so much in the game and our fans, like I do, will have many fond memories of him wearing the green and white shirt.”

Evans’ final appearance for Northern Ireland at senior level came in a friendly match against Spain in Mallorca back in June.
