There will not be a new left back arriving at Manchester United this summer, it’s official.
Well, it’s not quite official, but The Athletic are reporting it, so it feels almost certain unless there is another twist in the tale.
United opted to secure a right back this summer to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has joined West Ham. In landing Noussair Mazraoui, they have a player like Diogo Dalot who can play both sides.
The Athletic say that United are “said to have decided against pursuing a left-back, ruling out a move for Fenerbahce’s Ferdi Kadioglu, despite reports in Turkey.
“Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot offer options in that position, and Erik ten Hag said Luke Shaw’s injury would not keep him out for too long,” the outlet says.
Kadioglu’s name and others such as Rennes’ Adrien Truffert, and free agents Marcos Alonso and Mario Hermoso have all been linked persistently with an Old Trafford switch this summer.
Ten Hag may be right that Shaw’s injury will not keep him out for long, but there is a growing perception that the England man’s body keeps failing him and that he can no longer be counted upon to provide an injury-free run at the top level.
Ineos could revisit the situation in the winter window if things do not improve. By then, Tyrell Malacia should also have returned to action, providing another option, but if he and Shaw continue to struggle, that could be the point at which Ineos pull the trigger.
Ten Hag also appears to have a lot of faith in youngster Harry Amass, who he said could be ready for first team football in three months or so.
However, the fact remains that in the meantime, if either Dalot or Mazraoui pick up an injury, it will be a case of using a centre back as a makeshift full back – Lisandro Martinez or Jonny Evans being the most likely.
If such an injury to either of the pair were to happen before the August 30th deadline, Ineos might decide to act after all, especially if they can pick up a free agent like Hermoso or arrange a loan as they did last season with Sergio Reguilon.
As for €35 million Kadioglu, Brighton fans will be happy to have United out of the chase as they close in on his signature.
