United eyeing “short-term fix” to address gaping issue, fans will not be too pleased – report

Apart from midfield, INEOS are also looking at adding another left-back to Manchester United’s current squad considering the injury problems they have in that position.

Luke Shaw, who missed the majority of games last season, has already suffered this season’s first injury which will keep him out for a few weeks while Tyrell Malacia is not expected to return before October.

New signing Noussair Mazraoui can play on the left, as can Diogo Dalot but both are right-backs by trade and Erik ten Hag wants a specialist in that position.

Academy sensation Harry Amass played in that position during pre-season but the manager feels he is not yet ready for the step-up and wants to take his time before throwing him into the deep end.

LB needed

The new co-owners are currently eyeing a midfielder and maybe even another forward and will have little money to address this gaping issue.

Hence, as per Manchester World, the plan is to try and dip into the free agent or loan market to try and find a solution.

Marcos Alonso, as relayed by The Peoples Person, remains an option as he is a free agent while a loan deal like last summer remains possible as well.

“United will also consider signing a left-back following Luke Shaw’s latest injury setback.

“Although both Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are viewed as makeshift options on the left side of defence, Ten Hag would rather have another specialist option to call upon while Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are both side lined, with Harry Amass not currently viewed as ready for the first-team frame.

Free agents or loans

“As it might only require a short-term fix, United will consider free agent and loan deals at full-back and could even look to replicate a move similar to their loan deal for Sergio Reguilon a year ago. Former Chelsea and Barcelona star Marcos Alonso is one option open to the club.”

Last season, Reguilon arrived from Tottenham Hotspur but left in January when Shaw regained fitness. But it proved to be the wrong decision as his fitness issues came back to haunt him soon after.

Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof had to play out of position to fill the gap while against Manchester City in the Community Shield, Lisandro Martinez played there, a move that did not work.

Hence, a short-term deal might not be the best solution considering Shaw’s constant injury problems. Mario Hermoso‘s signing has already been ruled out while Ben Chilwell is also being monitored.
