Manuel Ugarte is set to complete his move to Manchester United imminently, having already landed in England to undergo medical tests.
Ugarte has been pushing for a move to Old Trafford all summer. As per a report from Fabrizio Romano, the player informed Paris Saint-Germain that he only intends to join the Red Devils.
The ball-winning machine only moved to Paris Saint-Germain last summer from Sporting. His start in the French capital was very promising, however, as the season progressed Luis Enrique pushed him out of his starting lineup in his pursuit of implementing a more possession-focused style of play.
The Uruguay international, who was named in this summer’s Copa America team of the tournament, was not handed any minutes in PSG’s opening two Ligue 1 games of the new season.
Regardless of this tricky situation, the French outfit and the Premier League giants were involved in long-drawn negotiations due to disagreement over Ugarte’s apt valuation.
According to The Daily Mail, United’s technical director Jason Wilcox headed to Paris to finalise negotiations. On Monday night, the two clubs agreed a deal worth an initial £42m plus a further £8.4m in add-ons to pave the way for Ugarte to move to the Theatre of Dreams.
Matt Hargreaves, the club’s director of player negotiations, also joined Wilcox in Paris to get the deal over the line.
The outlet adds that the 23-year-old travelled to the UK from Paris by private jet late on Tuesday night before heading to Manchester to undergo his medical and become the club’s fifth signing of the summer.
On Tuesday morning, Ugarte underlined just how excited he is about the move by sending a cryptic X post after news broke that United have finally convinced PSG to sell their midfielder.
The eyes emoji were enough to suggest he is set to become a Red Devil.
Akin to Ugarte, United have also been clear about their desire all summer. Romano has revealed the Mancunian outfit saw the player as their “option number 1, 2 and 3” to strengthen their midfield.
Despite PSG’s hard stance, United never left negotiations nor made offers for other midfielders, as they view Ugarte as the “perfect fit” for Ten Hag’s system.
