Ten Hag feels academy sensation tipped for a breakthrough “not ready”, player “forced” to wait

Manchester United youngster Harry Amass is not deemed ready for first-team action for the time being, as per reports.

United grabbed plenty of positive headlines on Wednesday morning after thrashing Barnsley 7-0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho added more goals to their tallies, out of form forward Antony enjoyed an encouraging outing, Manuel Ugarte made his debut, and Altay Bayındır kept a cleansheet in a rare start between the sticks.

Still, a few fans on social media were left a bit disappointed with Erik ten Hag’s decision to overlook Amass for his matchday squad despite the absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. The United gaffer instead decided to place his trust in midfielder Toby Collyer to cover the left-flank.

The highly-rated academy left-back, who moved to United from Watford in 2023, raised plenty of eyebrows with his scintillating performances during pre-season ahead of the new term.

During the pre-season, Ten Hag addressed his potential role in the first-team fold, stating: “If we train him well, if we coach him well, then, in three months, it’s possible that he can be on that point.

“But, in this moment, he needs to catch up and he has to develop some skills already to play for Manchester United, competing for the highest positions in the league.”

Now, GIVEMESPORT has suggested fans might have to wait a lot longer than three months to see Amass make regular appearances for the senior side.

The report claims Ten Hag has decided that the 17-year-old is currently “not ready” for a breakthrough season in the first-team.

The Dutchman is adamant that Amass, who is yet to make his senior debut despite being named in several matchday squads in recent months, needs to continue working on his development. For now, the young left-back will be “forced to remain patient.”

It is added “there is a feeling behind the scenes” that the starlet needs more time to become physically ready for the highest level.

Regardless, there are still “high hopes” for the ex-Watford sensation to cement his place in Ten Hag’s setup.

This term, Amass has managed three appearances for United’s U-21 side, registering two assists in the process.
