Ten Hag blocked multiple last-minute loan deals for two first team stars yesterday – report

Erik ten Hag blocked multiple loan deals for two first team players yesterday as the transfer deadline drew to a close.

It was reported yesterday evening that Betis were interested in both Antony and Christian Eriksen, two players who are not regular starters at Old Trafford.

The news caused quite a buzz for an hour or so before transfer guru Fabrizio Romano tweeted that Antony would not go to Seville and “wants to stay at Manchester United”.

According to The Mail, it was the manager who blocked the move.

“Scott McTominay was allowed to leave Manchester in a £25.7m Deadline Day switch to Napoli, but manager Erik ten Hag was unwilling to permit any other members of his squad to leave in the final few hours.

“Ten Hag has been keen to keep hold of players he deems integral to United’s ambition to get back to the top of the Premier League, with Antony and Eriksen in his plans for the long season ahead,” the outlet says.

“Brentford also had a loan bid rejected by Man United for Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen.”

It seems reasonable in the cases of both that the manager would veto a move.

The massive clearout of players in this summer’s window left United very short in both the right wing and central/attacking midfield areas in which they operate.

Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Facu Pellistri and Omari Forson have all left the club, leaving Antony and Amad as the only specialist right wingers.

Meanwhile Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay and Hannibal have all left Eriksen’s department, leaving just Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, new signing Manu Ugarte, youngster Toby Collyer and the Dane himself.

Another player who is staying at the club despite some late interest is Victor Lindelof.

With the arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, it is unlikely the Swede will be offered a new contract and so United’s only hope of cashing in on the player would be to sell him between now and June 2025.

With the Saudi Arabian transfer window still open and interest having been shown in Lindelof by the PIF, it is still possible that he could leave in this window.
