Ten Hag admits to key United star’s poor form after another shocking display vs. Twente

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has finally addressed Bruno Fernandes’ poor form for the club after another shocking performance against FC Twente.

Fernandes produced a below-par performance for United as they were held to a frustrating draw at Selhurst Park by Crystal Palace last weekend.

On that occasion, the United skipper was easily one of his side’s poorest performers, and Ten Hag’s failure to substitute him attracted criticism from some sections of the fanbase and the media.

Ten Hag elected to keep faith with Fernandes for United’s Europa League opener against FC Twente and the decision backfired spectacularly.

In yet another game, the Portugal international failed to come up with the goods. He constantly gave the ball away and proved to be ineffective in set-pieces and dead-ball situations – things that annoyed supporters.

Fernandes also missed a good chance to give the Red Devils the lead after Twente restored parity in the 68th minute.

However, Ten Hag has insisted he is not worried about the playmaker as he will eventually come good.

The Dutchman spoke to reporters at Carrington ahead of United’s weekend clash against Ange Postecolgou’s Tottenham Hotspur and was asked whether Fernandes is tired.

He said, “I think the team brings him in a situation. I think he is capable and he has proven already, so many times in the Premier League, he can create many chances.”

“I am convinced he will not do differently. He will come on this point, he will find his form.”

“He is already creating chances but he will make final passes, he will score goals. One hundred per cent and it is just a matter of time.”

When quizzed about whether there were any knocks coming out of the European tie vs. Twente, Ten Hag replied, “No, I don’t think so.”

“It will be the same squad as yesterday [Wednesday].”

“I think it will be a very intense game. It always is against Tottenham and I think it is also our style as well. So I think it is going to be a very dynamic, attractive game.”

Spurs vs. United kicks off on Sunday at 16:30 BST.
