Solskjaer turns down offer to manage international side, looks set to land big job in club football – report

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly turned down the Denmark national team job as he continues negotiations with a “major club.”

Solskjaer was in the Old Trafford dugout from 2018 to 2021 before he was eventually sacked.

He initially started on an interim basis but was handed the role permanently after a string of fine performances and results.

However, by the time he was dismissed, United had won just one of their seven Premier League fixtures, with the final nail on the coffin being a humiliating 4-1 loss at the hands of Watford.

Two weeks ago, Solskjaer spoke at a public forum and was asked about the possibility of returning to United. He admitted that he would be open to such a move if the club were to present him with such an opportunity.

Danish publication Tipsbladet now reveals that the Norwegian was offered the Denmark job, as a replacement for Kasper Hjulman who left the role, but he declined.

Journalist Farzam Abolhosseini reports, “According to Tipsbladet’s information, Ole Gunnar Solskjær is in negotiations with a major club about a head coaching job, and he therefore did not want to enter into a job interview with Peter Møller and DBU.”

It’s understood that there was hope that Solskjaer could be enticed to take over the national team job but Denmark’s efforts to lure him were not successful.

When contacted for comment about the situation, DBU director of football – Peter Møller – refused to confirm whether or not an approach had been made for Solskjaer.

Møller simply said, “As we have said from the start and repeated several times, we will of course not comment on the people we talk to or do not talk to in the process of finding a new national coach.”

Solskjaer’s agent did not comment on the matter.

If Solskjaer had taken the job, he would have worked with United duo Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund.

Both stars are currently with the national team ahead of their Nations League fixtures against Spain and Switzerland on Saturday and Tuesday respectively.
