Serie A side a “concrete possibility” to land United defender, but there’s a catch – report

Fiorentina are a serious contender to sign Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof if the English club pay off the defender to exit the club.

The Swedish international has been at United since 2017 and he has played 259 matches during his time at Old Trafford.

Over recent years he has seen his importance to the team diluted significantly and his sale was reportedly under discussion in last week’s major transfer meeting at the club.

Lisandro Martinez is the undoubted number one option in defence for the Red Devils under Erik ten Hag and with two new signings in the form of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, there does not seem much space for Lindelof in the first team bar an injury crisis on the same level as last season.

The Swede has been linked to numerous clubs this summer and it has been relayed here that Fiorentina have “set their sights” on the 30 year old and Eintracht Frankfurt also harbour an interest in the centre back.

Italian outlet Corriere Fiorentina builds on previous reports of La Viola’s interest in the player.

It is said that Lindelof is serious option for club. However, “the obstacle is his salary, but if the Red Devils were to decide to get rid of him early, perhaps paying him a severance package, then Fiorentina could become a concrete possibility.”

It has already been reported that the Swede’s large wages of around £120,000 a week has been a rather big stumbling block to a move away from the club.

Another reason why United are so keen to offload Lindelof this summer is due to the fact that his contract runs out in 2025 and were he to stay this window, he would likely leave on a free next year.

With the Red Devils aiming to continue to strengthen their squad during the final days of the window, they are unlikely to entertain Fiorentina’s desire to cancel his contract and lose out on any sort of financial compensation.

The issue of overpaying players has been an endemic problem at United for at least a decade and Ineos have felt the full brunt of this due to stricter PSR rules.

Therefore selling players like Casemiro, despite his improved form, and Lindelof has been a lot more challenging than it perhaps should have been.
