Manchester United have confirmed that Luke Shaw has sustained a calf injury that is expected to rule him out of action in the early stages of the 2024/25 season.
United are scheduled to kickstart their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Fulham on Friday.
However, Shaw will not be available to Erik ten Hag for selection, in a major blow to the Dutchman and his hopes of starting the campaign on a high note.
A statement issued by United read, “Luke Shaw will miss the opening games of the Premier League season due to a calf injury sustained at the start of pre-season training.”
“He is working hard on his rehabilitation with a view to being available after the first international break.”
The international break is scheduled for September 1 – 9.
This means Shaw will miss top-flight clashes vs. Fulham (August 16), Brighton and Hove Albion (August 24) and Liverpool (September 1).
Shaw endured an injury-riddled 2023/24 campaign that saw him make only 12 appearances in the Premier League. He played just 15 games across all competitions.
He was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 but he did not play in their group matches against Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia.
It was not until a meeting in the quarter-final vs. Switzerland that Shaw got a taste of the action when he was brought on from the bench in the 78th minute to replace United teammate Kobbie Mainoo.
It remains to be seen whether United dip into the market to secure the services of another left-back amidst the latest setback suffered by Shaw. His deputy, Tyrell Malacia, is also undergoing fitness struggles of his own and is unlikely to be available for the start of the new campaign.
United recently promoted academy starlet Harry Amass to the senior squad after a stellar pre-season in the United States but the young full-back can’t be solely relied upon to start every week.
