Manchester United welcome arch rivals Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday with another chapter in the historic fixture set to be written.
Erik ten Hag’s men will be hoping to bounce back from defeat at Brighton last weekend whilst Arne Slot’s Liverpool come marching into Manchester with back-to-back wins having kicked off his reign on Merseyside.
Experienced referee Anthony Taylor has been announced a the primary match official for the game, just as he was for the same fixture last year.
Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo struck wonderful individual efforts to give United a 2-1 lead that afternoon before a Mo Salah penalty ensured Liverpool left with a point, albeit alongside a major dent in their title hopes.
Taylor’s decision to award the visitors a penalty on the day was argued by United fans, with Wan-Bissaka touching the ball in his lunge on Harvey Elliot.
However, the United defender was a touch reckless in his attempts to stop Elliott and Old Trafford would have been in uproar for the same decision had the incident occurred in the Liverpool box.
Taylor was also in charge for one of the most painful moments for United fans last season – the 3-1 loss against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Alejandro Garancho thought he’d given United a last gasp lead in London before a lengthy VAR check cruelly ruled the goal out by the absolute finest of margins.
United went onto to ship two stoppage time goals to Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus, causing them to leave the capital empty handed after a spirited display that might have changed the momentum of the season for both clubs.
Taylor did oversee a United victory last year, officiating the 2-0 FA Cup win at Wigan that was an important stepping stone towards Ten Hag’s troops winning the competition.
Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will be Taylor’s assistants on Sunday with Sam Barrott handed the role of fourth official. John Brooks and Harry Lennard will be operating as the chief and assistant VAR, respectively.
Both sides will be hoping the officials enjoy a positive afternoon, which seem to be all to rare in Premier League games these days.
