Casemiro is almost certain to stay at Manchester United this season, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
The Brazilian had a nightmare season last time around and looked a yard off the frenetic pace of the Premier League for much of the season.
This led to widespread rumours that the club was hoping to offload him this summer.
However, his £350,000 per week pay packet meant that few clubs could afford him and the most likely outlet was the Saudi Pro League.
That now looks to have been ruled out, with Romano saying in this morning’s Daily Briefing:
“Casemiro was on the market … this summer and there was interest from Al Ittihad, but then their president resigned and everything they changed and they didn’t go for Casemiro.
“It now seems like the Brazilian midfielder is staying at Old Trafford.”
Whilst keeping those wages on the books will commit United to an £18.2m spend this season, the news could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the Red Devils.
Casemiro has emerged this season trimmer and fitter than he appeared last, and has put in some excellent performances in pre-season, in the Community Shield and in Friday’s Premier League opener against Fulham.
If indeed the 32 year old is able to return to the form he showed when he first joined United, there are few if any better defensive midfielders in the world and Al Ittihad’s loss will be United’s gain.
As reported here and here, the Brazilian’s renaissance could force United to rethink their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte, who would be likely to cost upwards of €50 million.
That, in turn, would free those funds up to strengthen in other areas.
With just 11 days of the transfer window remaining, there are few solid transfer stories emerging, with most rumours centring around a new left back due to Luke Shaw’s ongoing injury problems, or an experienced striker to complement Josh Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund.
