Manchester United Women’s goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce has revealed that she is ready to take over the gloves from Mary Earps.
Earps left United this summer and joined Paris Saint-Germain in what was considered a big blow for the side, losing one of their biggest stars.
The England goalkeeper made a lasting impression at the club, helping them win their first trophy last season in the form of the cup and making great strides with the England national team since making her debut in 2019.
American keeper Tullis-Joyce joined United last year however and told the BBC that she is ready to take on the challenge of replacing Earps as number one.
She has already received kind words from her boss, Marc Skinner, as he labelled her the “best shot stopper” he has ever worked with and a “big-time” keeper.
She has experience in France and the United States but only played four matches in all of the previous campaign for the Red Devils.
Tullis-Joyce doesn’t believe this will hold her back however claiming, “while I didn’t have much game time last season, I have been the starting goalkeeper for some big teams.”
“I definitely respect the decisions of my coaching staff. They were also very transparent on my role in the team and how they wanted me to develop.”
The New Yorker believes that she has learned a lot from Earps and this will stand her in good stead for the season to come by stating, “Mary is a good laugh, a good personality but she also very much set the standards. While we had a laugh, we were very serious and got our job done.”
“We were able to progress as a group, even though we were all three different goalkeepers. We got our work in and that’s what has prepared me for this season.”
The 27 year old explained that her career had been “interesting” and perhaps she has been a little bit of a “late-bloomer” but she believes that no matter what age you are as a player, you can still learn and grow.
The keeper also asserted that she is committed to giving her all for the club and her teammates as that is what everyone in the side demands.
She also noted that she is “very loyal” to whatever team she joins and is keen to learn the history of the club, which admittedly there is much of at United.
Discussing her ambitions for the season Tullis-Joyce claimed: “I want to show my work ethic. I want to show my communication skills and just own it. I want to be a strong force at the back. No matter what happens, I want my team-mates to know I’m there for them.”
She will aim to make the best start possible when United’s Women host West Ham United this Saturday on the opening weekend of the Womens’ Super League season.
