Manchester United fan favourite Juan Mata has found a new club following his stint in Japan.
The Spaniard spent the summer as a free agent, having departed Vissel Kobe early this year upon the expiration of his contract.
He moved to the J1 League club in September of 2023 after enjoying a successful 2022-23 campaign with Galatasaray, which saw the Turkish giants lift their 23rd league title in their history.
He made 18 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and assisting twice for the Istanbul-based outfit.
The World Cup-winning midfielder, however, did not enjoy plenty of minutes on the field in Japan, managing just one appearance. Still, he picked up a league winners’ medal as Vissel Kobe secured the J1 League. Now, he is set to chase a trophy in another country.
Mata has officially joined Western Sydney Wanderers ahead of the 2024-25 A-League Men season.
The 36-year-old has agreed to put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Australian outfit.
“I’m really excited to join the Western Sydney Wanderers, the only Australian team to ever win the Asian Champions League, and I cannot wait to arrive and train with the team to prepare for the season ahead,” the midfielder said.
“I’m feeling grateful and excited for this new adventure, and looking forward to trying to win another Championship in a different league.”
There is no doubt many United fans will be keeping a close watch on Mata’s adventure down under.
Having swapped Chelsea for the Red Devils in 2014, the Spanish magician delivered countless memorable moments in a Red shirt. Before his departure in 2022, Mata went on to play 285 games for the Mancunian giants, winning four trophies.
Meanwhile, another much-adored Old Trafford star could soon find himself playing in a non-European league. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming that Brazilian side Flamengo have approached Anthony Martial, who is available on a free transfer.
