“Has been discussed”: United plotting sensational move for CL winner to fix problem position – Athletic

Manchester United’s injury woes are deepening ahead of their opening Premier League game of the season as Luke Shaw has now been ruled out till the international break.

The England international’s poor injury record coupled with Tyrell Malacia’s ongoing troubles means the Red Devils are currently without a specialist senior left-back just like last season.

Erik ten Hag was forced to rely on Victor Lindelof, a centre-back by trade, and defensive midfielder Sofyan Amrabat to fill the void and the strategy backfired.

Both Diogo Dalot and new signing Noussair Mazraoui are right-backs but are versatile and can play on the opposite flank but the club remain open to recruiting a specialist.

LB needed

There were talks of a move for free agent Mario Hermoso but the 20-time English league champions have moved on with the Spaniard looking likely to head to Saudi Arabia instead.

The Athletic have now added former Chelsea ace Marcos Alonso’s name into the mix. He is currently a free agent having left Barcelona after spending two years at Camp Nou.

“Luke Shaw missed pre-season due to a break after getting to the final of the European Championship with England, having been out injured for the final three months of last season. There is still some uncertainty over fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia’s return after more than a year on the sidelines with a serious knee problem.

“United are investigating options. Club executives met former Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso, with the 29-year-old free agent holding talks with prospective new clubs. But he is not a player United are pursuing at this time.

Alonso being considered

“Marcos Alonso, 33, who is also a free agent after leaving Barcelona, has been discussed at the club.”

The former Champions League winner only made eight appearances last season owing to a back injury and United certainly do not need another injury-prone player at the club.

He is currently 33 and would be a stop-gap solution at best. Being a free agent makes him attractive but there are much better options out there which the club can sign on the cheap.

Ben Chilwell is another Chelsea ace that United are looking at and a lot will depend on how much money INEOS have left to spend on that position with midfield and attack still in need of further additions.
