From Italy: Serie A club rejects €50m bid from United for classy midfielder despite earlier denials

Manchester United have reportedly seen an opening offer worth €50m turned down by Atalanta for midfielder Ederson.

With slightly over a week left until the close of the summer transfer window, United are understood to be scrambling to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

Throughout the summer, a number of options have been mooted including Sander Berge, Amadou Onana, Martin Zubimendi, Manuel Ugarte and of course, Ederson.

United are believed to be in advanced talks with Paris Saint-Germain for Ugarte, who has more than made it clear he wishes to complete a switch to Old Trafford.

Earlier this summer, when a deal for Ugarte seemed like it was off, Ederson was mentioned as an alternative to the Uruguay international.

It was stated that a fee in the region of £38-42 million could potentially convince Atalanta to part ways with the Brazilian. However, more recently, Fabrizio Romano ruled out the possibility of Erik ten Hag’s side swooping in for Ederson before deadline day.

Contrary to Romano’s information, fellow Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla revealed that United “asked for information” about Ederson during a visit to Atalanta’s headquarters to discuss matters related to Rasmus Hojlund’s move from a year ago.

Pedulla explained that United – who enjoy a great relationship with Atalanta – took the opportunity to enquire about Ederson’s situation at the club. Atalanta “responded calmly” and a “cordial exchange of information” took place between the two outfits.

Pedulla has now given another key update and indicated that the Red Devils lodged a bid worth €50m for Ederson, which was swiftly rejected by La Dea.

The journalist further wrote, “Yesterday there was a meeting between some representatives of Manchester United and Atalanta to settle some paperwork related to the sale of Hojlund last summer. And it was the right opportunity to close news about Ederson, the midfielder born in 1999 who has had an extraordinary performance.”

“Manchester United had been following and appreciating him for some time, yesterday they announced a proposal of 50 million but there is no margin for Atalanta to sell him in these last 10 days of the market.”

Pedulla noted that Ederson’s situation is one to watch out for in the coming months as contacts between United and Atalanta may continue.
