Burnley have reportedly agreed a £9.5 million deal to sign Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri.
Yesterday, it was confirmed the 21-year-old would be making the short trip from Old Trafford to Turf Moor as the two clubs had reached a “verbal agreement” over his transfer.
Initially, Fabrizio Romano reported it would be a loan with an obligation to buy. However, the transfer expert then revealed it would be a “permanent deal instead”, with United requesting a change to the deal to allow for “funds [to] be received earlier.”
Despite Mejbri joining United in 2019 from Monaco, his time at Old Trafford means his “book value is now the same as an academy player.” This ensures his departure constitutes “pure profit” from a financial fair play perspective, The Athletic explains.
And with the Tunisian midfielder only having twelve months remaining on his deal with United, this summer represented the last chance to command a fee for his services; which is why the price agreed was such a positive surprise.
Chris Wheeler (Daily Mail) reveals United were able to agree a £9.5 million fee for Mejbri. The Athletic corroborates this figure, contending the 21-year-old “will join the Championship club for an initial £5.4million alongside a further £4m in bonuses, with United retaining a buyback option and sell-on clause in the deal.”
Ugarte deal close now. Uruguay midfielder heading to Mcr for a medical after Utd agreed terms with PSG – £42m plus £8.4m in add-ons. McTominay to Napoli for £26m and Hannibal to Burnley for £9.5m expected to go through as well #mufc https://t.co/tJrzVrxp3r

However, Fabrizio Romano contends it is in fact a deal worth £9 million including add-ons.

Regardless of which figure is correct, it remains an excellent fee for a player with an expiring contract who the club were actively seeking to sell after having fallen down the pecking order in the first-team, given his nominal academy status.
The sale also represents a triple threat of transfer dealings in midfield at Old Trafford over the past few days.
Scott McTominay is set to join Mejbri in an exit from United after a £25.4 million deal was agreed with Italian side Napoli. And, in the opposite direction, the Red Devils have agreed a transfer worth a potential £50 million for PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte after a protracted pursuit of the Uruguayan international.
It is a considerable price for Ugarte but, when balanced against the £35 million raised by the sales of two academy players the club were happy to let go, it becomes a far better deal.
