Manchester United could be set for an unexpected financial boost as the club’s former defender Teden Mengi is on the brink of a move to Serie A side Torino.
Mengi, 22, left Old Trafford last summer to join newly-promoted Luton Town as the 2022/23 playoff winners attempted to build a squad capable of surviving life in the Premier League. Unfortunately, the Hatters were unable to do so, finishing 18th.
They did, however, perform the best out of the three promoted sides and Kenilworth Road was quickly established as an uncomfortable ground for the league’s big boys to visit; a throwback stadium more reminiscent of the home of FA Cup giant killings than a Premier League fixture.
Mengi’s performances were positive for his new club as he firmly established himself as a key cog in manager Rob Edwards’ three-man defensive system.
As a result, the defender was linked with potential moves to Everton and Fulham, while there was also reported interest from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. These moves did not materialise, however.
But now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Torino look set to land the 22-year-old with “negotiations underway” with Luton.
The Italian transfer expert reveals “personal terms [are] close to being agreed” with Mengi hiring new representatives – Enhance Sports Group – to help complete the move.
And, owing to a significant sell-on clause included in the deal which took Mengi from Luton to United, the Red Devils will profit from whatever price Torino agree to pay for the club’s academy graduate.
The transfer fee Luton agreed with United remains undisclosed but the sell-on clause is described as “high” by Simon Peach (PA Media).
It’s a style of transfer Old Trafford officials have made standard operating procedure when selling young players in recent years. A clause in the region of 25-50% has been included in numerous academy graduate’s departures, with Peach’s description of ‘high’ indicating it is likely to be closer to the 50 mark than 25.
If, for example, United had agreed a 40% sell-on clause with Luton, they would be entitled to over £4 million from a deal worth £10.12 million – Mengi’s valuation on Transfermarkt – should the Championship club sell their defender at that price. And Mengi’s status as an academy player on United’s books, ensures this fee would constitute ‘pure profit’ from a financial fair play perspective.
While the fee may seem paltry to an entity the size of United, in a summer where every team is facing acute pressure from FFP, £4 million in ‘pure profit’, from an unexpected source of income, would be a welcome addition to any club.
