European giant set to win red-hot race for Mason Greenwood after Marseille rules out PSG deal – report

Barcelona “remain interested” in signing former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood as the 23-year-old’s impressive form for Marseille this season continues.

The Red Devils sold Greenwood to the Ligue 1 side in the summer in a deal worth a potential £26.6 million, with a significant sell-on clause attached – though this percentage is reportedly open to change if United wish.

Catching the Attention of Europe’s Elite

This means the Red Devils would receive a significant financial boost this summer if Greenwood were to be sold. And his form in a Marseille shirt has certainly caught the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, both domestically and on the continent.

Since arriving at the Orange Vélodrome, the Englishman has scored 15 times in all competitions and provided a further three assists. He’s the second top scorer in Ligue 1, behind only Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele.

And a report, as explained by The Peoples Person here, revealed the French champions were exploring a deal to bring Greenwood to Paris to strengthen Luis Enrique’s squad with a more natural number nine.

However, Marseille would “prefer to do business with a foreign suitor” if Greenwood is sold, rather than strengthening a direct rival.

Barcelona Still in the Hunt

Before United agreed a deal with Marseille in the summer to sell Greenwood, a host of clubs across Europe had registered interest in the forward.

Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Napoli Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona were all heavyweights from the continent’s biggest leagues to have been linked with Greenwood, among other smaller clubs as well.

A report relayed by The Peoples Person revealed the Catalan club had been impressed by the English forward’s performances on loan at Getafe last season and wanted to sign him in the summer. And while a deal never materialised, it appears Barcelona’s interest in the 23-year-old did not diminish.

TEAMtalk contend Blaugrana “remain interested” in Greenwood with the scouting team at Camp Nou still “big admirers” of the forward.

However, the report reveals, the forward would have to take a “wage cut” to facilitate a move to Spain due to Barcelona’s constrained financial situation, which could see them target Lille striker Jonathan David on a free transfer instead.

Given Greenwood has also really sampled Spanish life in Madrid, the 23-year-old would almost certainly be very interested in a switch to one of Europe’s biggest clubs, even if he has to take an economic hit to make it happen.

This move would also have particular relevance for his former employees in Manchester due to United’s sell-on clause, which would see them net a significant windfall from Greenwood’s potential sale this summer.

Any money generated would constitute ‘pure profit’ from a PSR perspective due to his academy status at Old Trafford ahead of a pivotal transfer window for INEOS and head coach Ruben Amorim. And the prospect of a bidding war emerging between two of Europe’s biggest clubs – PSG and Barcelona – will be music to their ears.
