European giant “in talks” with United over sensational swoop for €80 million star – The Athletic

Juventus have opened “talks” with Manchester United over a potential move for Jadon Sancho as the summer transfer window heads into its final week.

A report by The Athletic reveals the Italian club have “stepped up communication” with their English counterparts over Sancho’s availability as they “want to sign two wingers” before the August 30 deadline. This corroborates a report relayed by The Peoples Person this morning of Juventus’ interest in signing the 24-year-old.

One target for the Old Lady is Nico Gonzalez – Fiorentina’s Argentine winger who is reportedly close to sealing a permanent switch from Florence to Turin. Juventus are still “deciding” on the second target, The Athletic contends, with Sancho a prime candidate.

An agreement on a deal which satisfies both clubs financially is “expected to be difficult” with United prioritising a “permanent sale”, though Old Trafford officials would be open to a loan deal with an obligation to buy clause attached.

The club has set a £40 million price tag to sign Sancho this summer but potential suitors have shown no willingness “to match that valuation” thus far.

Juventus are “expected to propose a loan with a salary contribution deal” and are likely to wait until the final days of the transfer window to try and leverage favourable conditions.

The Athletic describes the Italian club as the “likeliest destination should Sancho depart” Old Trafford this week, dismissing reports linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Juventus had previously considered an approach for Sancho in January when United were seeking to loan out the winger following his public dispute with manager Erik ten Hag earlier in the season.

Massimiliano Allegri, the club’s then-manager, rejected the potential signing, however, as he “did not see Sancho working in the 3-5-2 system he used at the time.”

Instead, the 24-year-old returned to Borussia Dortmund on loan, helping his former side reach the Champions League final in the process.

However, Allegri has since been replaced by Thiago Motta – the manager who led Bologna to an impressive 4th-placed finish in Serie A last season and employs a 4-2-3-1 system. The Athletic describes Sancho as a “much better fit at Juventus under Motta than Allegri”, indicating why the Italian club have revisited their interest in the English winger.

From United’s perspective, they are open to Sancho’s departure as long as it “makes sense from a profitability and sustainability (PSR) point of view”, as the club seeks to “make sales to provide budgetary space for purchases.” The ongoing pursuit of Manuel Ugarte – PSG’s 23-year-old defensive midfielder – would be helped by Sancho’s exit, as an example.
