A well-placed source at Stamford Bridge reveals Chelsea “prefer to sign [Jadon Sancho] permanently” rather than on a loan deal as Manchester United continue to push for their winger’s departure before Friday’s transfer deadline.
Sky Sports reveals the London club are “still pushing” to strike a deal for Sancho ahead of Juventus, who have tabled a loan offer for the 24-year-old.
The report states: “Chelsea and Juventus are still pushing to sign Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho. While Juventus are keen to sign Sancho, there is a growing feeling from them that the player wants to go to Chelsea.”
“One source has indicated Chelsea prefer to sign him permanently – though all options are being explored. Juventus are only prepared to do a loan.”
Sancho’s preference for a switch to London over Turin corroborates a report relayed by The Peoples Person which revealed the English winger was “holding out” a move to Chelsea. The Sky Sports report also indicates Sancho is in “discussions” with the Blues over personal terms.
The former Borussia Dortmund forward was born in Camberwell, an area of South London in the borough of Southwark, roughly five miles from Stamford Bridge. The prospect of a return to the place he grew up in is likely to be appealing to Sancho.
Despite a reconciliation between Erik ten Hag and Sancho following his return from a loan spell in Germany, United’s preference has been to sell the winger this summer.
The club had set an asking price of £40 million but there was zero interest from potential suitors, including both Dortmund and Juventus, in paying that fee. United were also open to a loan deal with an obligation to buy but, as yet, have received no such offers.
Which is why Chelsea’s preference for a permanent transfer could provide a massive boost in the final hours of a frantic summer for the Red Devils.
Sancho’s continued presence at Old Trafford is a headache for the club given Ten Hag’s obvious preference for other attackers over him.
A loan deal without an obligation to buy, as presented by Juventus yesterday, would simply defer this issue until next summer. The Italian club’s offer also provided only partial cover for Sancho’s costly wage packet, requiring United to facilitate the rest – something Old Trafford officials are keen to avoid.
However, if a permanent deal could be agreed with Chelsea, this would solve both of these issues with one elegant solution. The fact United may also be able to agree a cut-price deal for Chelsea’s own wantaway winger, Raheem Sterling, as a replacement for Sancho would only sweeten the deal.
