Maguire gives his verdict on Amorim’s bold selection gamble for crunch Europa League clash with Lyon

Harry Maguire says he still enjoys playing with Andre Onana and is looking forward to teaming up with the keeper again on Thursday, as Manchester United get set to host Lyon at Old Trafford.

United will take on Lyon in the return leg of their quarter-final tie. The aggregate score currently stands at 2-2 from the first game and the stakes could not be higher.

The Red Devils have endured a wretched season but there is still a chance to salvage some lost pride by winning the Europa League and in the process, qualify for the Champions League.

Maguire accompanied Ruben Amorim to the pre-match press conference and looked ahead to the contest with Lyon. The England international backed Onana, who has endured a difficult few days following his error-prone display at the Groupama Stadium last week.

Onana was at fault for both goals United conceded and was subsequently dropped from Sunday’s 4-1 defeat at Newcastle. However, Amorim told reporters that the Cameroonian will start in the second leg.

Maguire said about this, “I think first and foremost, Andre has proved in the past that he is an excellent goalkeeper. He has won numerous trophies. But you always have spells in your career where you have ups and downs.”

“At the moment, he is probably feeling that everything is going against him. Playing in front of Andre is great; I have confidence in Andre. We all know he is an excellent goalkeeper.”

The defender continued, “Try your best to ignore it all [the spotlight], focus on your job, come in on a daily basis and do your best. That is all you can do. Tomorrow night is another game of football and you have to say to yourself, ‘Do your best and that’s all you can do. ‘ I have been in that situation myself.”

“All you can do, day in, day out, is do your best and work as hard as possible.”

Maguire emphasised the importance of winning the Europa League as he admitted that performances have picked up a bit too late in the season.

“Obviously it has been a disappointing season, there is no doubt about it. From the start of the season, we have been far too inconsistent. I think performances have picked up late. A lot of games have been 50-50 and we have ended up on the bad end of the result. Tomorrow night is a big game for us and it is one I am looking forward to it.”

“Winning a trophy would be massive and it gives us access to the Champions League for next season. This is the only competition that we are left in and tomorrow night, we are looking forward to it.”

United vs. Lyon kicks off at 20:00 BST.

“100 per cent”: Rooney makes stunning United claim about Rashford after his heroics vs. PSG

Manchester United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has claimed that Marcus Rashford is still keen on lining up for his boyhood club despite enjoying a renaissance at Aston Villa.

Rashford fell out of favour under Ruben Amorim and was left out of several matchday squads, prompting the club to sanction his loan move to Villa. He has looked like a player reborn at the Birmingham outfit, registering an impressive return of six assists and three goals in 15 games.

The England international produced a top performance on Tuesday as Villa threatened to pull off a stunning comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.

He played more than an hour, delivering an exquisite assist for Ezri Konsa but the hosts just couldn’t quite get over the finish line.

Speaking on Amazon Prime after the game, Rashford’s former United teammate Rooney said that he hopes the 27-year-old will return to Old Trafford once his loan spell with Villa ends. Rooney added that Rashford still wants to play for the Red Devils.

Rooney explained [as quoted by the Daily Mail], “Marcus Rashford wants to play for Manchester United, 100 per cent. He is a Manchester lad, Man United fan, and over the last couple of years it has been difficult. He needed to play and it was clear he wouldn’t play for the rest of the season at United.”

“He has clearly shown, sometimes you have to keep banging on the manager’s door, put them in a position where they can’t leave you out in an ideal world he would like to leave a legacy at United, whether that is possible I don’t know, but this is what I’d love to see.”

Rooney added [via Express], “We have to give a massive shoutout to Marcus Rashford, I thought he was fantastic, [it was like] the Rashford we’ve seen over the years. Massive skill, ability, you see here [during a replay of the goal], getting at players, driving at them, pulling the ball back.”

“The big thing [for Villa] now is keeping hold of them players, Marco Asensio, Rashford, but I hope they don’t [keep hold of them].”

“I hope Rashford goes back to United and performs like he did tonight, that’s what we all want to see as Man United fans. They [Villa] would have to finish in the Champions League, it would be a waste.”

Villa have the option of making Rashford’s signing a permanent one for £40m.

Meanwhile, United return to action on Thursday as they welcome Lyon for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie. The aggregate score is level at 2-2 following the first leg.

“United have maintained contact:” Ruben Amorim aiming to land prominent Bundesliga attacker in summer swoop – report

Manchester United appear to be advancing in their pursuit of RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons.

With the summer transfer window approaching, Simons’ desire to pursue a new challenge reportedly convinced Leipzig to slash his price tag from €80 million to €59 million in order to facilitate his departure.

Just a few days later, The Peoples Person relayed that Man United received another boost in their pursuit of Simons with Liverpool leaving the race.

Now, it appears as if United’s pursuit of the Dutch forward is becoming concrete.

“United have maintained contact over the RB Leipzig attacking midfielder, who is one of several options they are juggling as they approach the summer window,” the Daily Mail reported, showing that United are actively engaging with Simons in an effort to facilitate a transfer.

Still, it appears as if United’s ability to sign Simons could be determined by one caveat.

“Xavi Simons has emerged as a target for Manchester United this summer, but Ruben Amorim’s transfer plans are likely to hinge on hitting the Champions League jackpot.”

Naturally, this requires manager Ruben Amorim to guide his team to victory in the UEFA Europa League.

United currently find themselves in the quarter-final of the competition, having drawn 2-2 with Olympique Lyonnais in the first leg.

Tomorrow night, United will face the all-important test of hosting Lyon at Old Trafford for the second leg, where they will hope to come away with the win.

No doubt, Amorim will hope to avoid a repetition of what happened in the previous match, where United gave up their lead in the final few seconds of the match, thereby missing out on the opportunity to walk into their home clash with an advantage.

Should United indeed qualify for the Champions League next season and convince Simons to join the club, he will no doubt be a welcome addition to the squad, particularly with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho seemingly destined to leave Old Trafford for good in the summer.

Ruben Amorim confirms Andre Onana will be United’s starting goalkeeper against Lyon

Ruben Amorim says Andre Onana will be the starting goalkeeper against Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League quarter final second leg tomorrow.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the game, the boss also confirmed that Joshua Zirkzee is out for the season but Jonny Evans, Ayden Heaven and Matthijs de Ligt will return soon.

United hold two crucial advantages in race for defensive monster with club finally ready to sell and player eyeing exit – report

Manchester United’s long-standing interest in Sporting centre-back Goncalo Ignacio could finally come to fruition in the summer, with the Portuguese club now reportedly open to selling 23-year-old.

According to A Bola, United’s pursuit of the Portuguese defender started over a year ago and ramped up after his former manager, Ruben Amorim, took control at Old Trafford.

Now, a significant change in attitude from the player’s current employers could see him sold in the summer, with the Red Devils right at the front of the queue.

A Bola claim that Sporting has previously “not shown itself willing for the player’s transfer” but “is now open to negotiation”.

Inacio “has seen increasing interest from several clubs in the main European leagues”, so competition for his signature would be intense, but United hold two major trump cards.

Most obviously, the talented centre-back has an existing relationship with Amorim and was a key part of the sensational side which won the title last year.

But he also shares an agent with Bruno Fernandes, who made the switch from Lisbon to Manchester five years ago, and A Bola note that the man who made this happen, Miguel Pinho, “has privileged relations with the Red Devils”.

For these reasons United are considered “one of the strongest candidates to sign him”.

There will certainly be others in the mix, though, and the report explains that German giants Borussia Dortmund enquired about Inacio in the January transfer window but were rebuffed by both club and player.

Since then – and no reason for this is given – there has been a change of heart in both parties.

For Sporting, “there is a willingness to negotiate and the price has been set” at €45m, while Inacio himself is “seeing a future outside Alvalade with different eyes”.

To further boost United’s hopes, A Bola claim that the departure of either Inacio or his centre-back partner Ousmane Diomande is “a likely scenario” in the summer.

And if for some reason negotiations hit a brick wall and the Red Devils are determined to bring him to Old Trafford come what may, they can resort to paying his release clause of €60m.

Jonny Evans back, but another United defender suffers injury “setback” in cursed season

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has returned to training ahead of the club’s Europa League meeting with Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday.

United are set to host Lyon for the return leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie, with the aggregate score currently balanced at 2-2 from the first clash.

Ahead of the match, United boss Ruben Amorim has been handed a timely injury boost, with Evans returning to training after a lengthy period of being injured.

Evans has been sidelined since December when he picked up a muscle issue.

He was last in a matchday squad when the Red Devils suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day at Molineux.

Evans last featured for United when they lost 4-3 to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on December 19.

Today morning, journalists were allowed to observe training and they revealed the delightful news of Evans’ return. Samuel Luckurst of the Manchester Evening News posted a video of the veteran defender undertaking running drills with his teammates.

Evans is expected to leave United this summer upon the expiry of his contract, so he is in the final stretch of his career with the 20-time English champions. There have even been suggestions that the 37-year-old could retire and take up a coaching role.

But it’s not all good news for United as Ayden Heaven did not take part in training today.

Heaven had just returned from a foot injury picked up in the 3-0 victory over Leicester City last month. He was on the bench for Sunday’s 4-1 drubbing at Newcastle and did not get a taste of minutes.

According to Simon Peach, the youngster missed training due to a “small setback.”

This information has been corroborated by Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail.
