From Germany: United’s chief of recruitment holds the key to Amorim landing “the next Erling Haaland” in the summer
Manchester United’s need for a striker can be clearly discerned from the fact that the Red Devils have netted a mere 38 goals in the Premier League so far this season, less than 15 other teams in the division.
Rasmus Hojlund has been the biggest disappointment given he had ended his debut season as the team’s top goalscorer. Naturally expectations were sky-high ahead of his sophomore campaign.
However, the 22-year-old has netted only thrice in the English top-flight and eight overall, a hugely disappointing tally and his recent form has been truly atrocious.
Which is why Ruben Amorim is open to letting him go in the summer with INEOS even open to a swap deal or a loan exit, such is their desperation.
United need a new striker
Finding a suitable replacement will not be easy especially if Europa League success eludes the club given the financial mess the club finds itself in currently.
Head of recruitment Christopher Vivell has proven to be extremely shrewd in the market as seen from the acquisition of Sekou Kone and as per Sport Bild, he is personally pushing for the signing of Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig.
He was present for the club’s previous Bundesliga fixture to check on the Slovenian, who joined the RB group due to Vivell’s influence.
However, it will not be an easy deal to crack given the 21-year-old’s importance to Leipzig. Sesko has 19 goals and six assists this season while last term, he managed 18 goals and two assists, which shows his improvement.
Having signed him for €24 million in 2023, the Bundesliga side are hoping to sell him for a record amount of €100 million with the who’s who of European football tailing the Slovenia international.
Vivell watching Sesko
“Interested parties have long been vying for a summer signing. And the Saxons have a goal internally: Sesko is set to become the record transfer in the club’s history.
“RB Leipzig promised his agents that the striker could join a top club this summer. However, the fee is freely negotiable and, from Leipzig’s perspective, should be close to €100 million.
“There are plenty of interested parties. On Friday, Christopher Vivell (38) was sitting in the stands in Wolfsburg. The Manchester United sporting director has a close relationship with Sesko, bringing him to Salzburg as a 16-year-old and luring the Slovenian to Leipzig in 2023.
“The striker is expected to be scoring goals at Old Trafford starting this summer. But Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Liverpool, and AC Milan are also keen to get the job done.”
Vivell’s influence could be key if United are to pull this deal off. His current market value stands at €65 million with his gameplay earning comparisons with Premier League superstar Erling Haaland.

United launch ambitious raid for €60m goalkeeping sensation on everyone’s lips in Europe – report
Manchester United are reportedly keeping close tabs on Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos ahead of the summer transfer window.
The goalkeeper position is increasingly becoming a huge concern for Ruben Amorim and the recruitment department, amidst uncertainty over Andre Onana and his deputy, Altay Bayindir. Both shot-stoppers have proven to be extremely error-prone and therefore unreliable.
Onana was culpable for both goals United conceded in the 2-2 Europa League draw with Lyon last week. The Cameroonian was dropped from United’s matchday squad for the subsequent Premier League meeting with Newcastle as a result. Bayindir was given the nod to start between the sticks but failed to justify his selection, conceding four goals from six shots on target and gifting the Magpies their fourth goal of the evening.
There has been increased chatter that Onana and Bayindir’s days at Old Trafford are numbered, with the club now gearing to dip into the market for their replacements. United have been linked to a number of goalkeepers including Lucas Chevalier (Lille), James Trafford (Newcastle), Senne Lamments (Royal Antwerp) and Bart Verbruggen (Brighton and Hove Albion).
Last month, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United attempted to sign Santos last year but they failed in their bid to land him as Frankfurt reacted quickly and tied him down to fresh terms.
Santos has been tipped to be the successor to Ederson (Manchester City) and Allison (Liverpool) in the Brazil national team.
Now, Sport Bild claim that United have renewed their interest in Santos and have even made an enquiry for him, potentially with a view to getting a deal over the line.
According to the German news outlet, “all of Europe’s top clubs” have the 23-year-old on their list. It’s understood that after his fine performance for Frankfurt against Tottenham Hotspur last week, the North London club’s technical director, Johan Lange, asked about his availability.
Lange was not alone as United’s director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, also spoke to Frankfurt chief Markus Krösche about Santos. Vivell is believed to have asked about Santos’ “future plans.”
Sport Bild note that anyone who wants Santos will have to fork out in excess of €60m to secure his services. Frankfurt have no desire to offload him unless a huge bid arrives.
Those close to the Vassouras-born footballer are of the opinion that he would benefit from staying at Frankfurt in the meantime to refine his trade and then seek a bigger move later in his career. They liken his situation to Bayern Munich legend Manuel Neuer, who made his name at Schalke before completing a switch to Bavaria.
Santos has made 13 appearances this season across the Bundesliga and Europa League. He has conceded 18 goals and kept three clean sheets in that period.
He made an immediate impact on his debut, coming off the bench at half-time to replace the injured Kevin Trapp during Frankfurt’s win over Wolfsburg. Standing at 6’4″, he’s a physically imposing goalkeeper with a strong, commanding presence between the posts.
After his performance in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham, German football legend Lothar Matthäus branded his saves “world-class.”
It remains to be seen whether United will intensify their pursuit of Santos or be deterred by his hefty price tag.

3-4-3: Amorim has chosen these 11 gladiators to see United safely to the Europa League semi-final – prediction
Ruben Amorim has said Andre Onana will be the starting goalkeeper against Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League quarter final second leg tonight.
Amorim has also confirmed that Joshua Zirkzee is out for the season after picking up a hamstring injury against Newcastle.
Harry Maguire will almost certainly return to the starting lineup, having been rested against the Geordies. Casemiro and Patrick Dorgu, too, should return.
We expect Victor Lindelof to make way for Maguire, with Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro keeping their places in the back three.
Diogo Dalot, an almost ever-present this season, will be right wing back with Dorgu on the left.
Other defensive options are Luke Shaw, who got a few minutes on Sunday, and Harry Amass, who made his first Premier League start in the 4-1 defeat.
Matthijs de Ligt is still out but expected back soon. Ayden Heaven is also out again, having had a “small setback”. Jonny Evans is back in training but not ready for selection, while Lisandro Martinez is out for several months.
Casemiro and Manu Ugarte will likely be the midfield pair.
Kobbie Mainoo is also available for selection in midfield but he has not had much football lately so is likely to be ring rusty. Christian Eriksen played on Sunday, so it is unlikely he’ll start this one. Toby Collyer is still injured.
Up front, in Zirkzee’s absence, Rasmus Hojlund will almost certainly return, with Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho the twin 10’s.
Mason Mount is another option but Amorim seems reluctant to start him. If he were to be in the initial XI, it might mean Ugarte dropping to the bench and Bruno Fernandes playing alongside Casemiro in midfield.
Chido Obi is not registered to play in the competition but there may be a spot on the bench for the impressive Gabriele Biancheri, who has been called up to first team training.
Amad is back training on the grass but not yet in team training.
It is clearly United’s biggest game of the season so far and so the re-introduction of Onana and Hojlund, players struggling desperately for form, is a big gamble by the head coach. But it is also the perfect opportunity for both to silence their critics and turn themselves from zeroes to heroes in the space of 90 short minutes.
Here then is our predicted line-up for tonight’s 8pm kick-off:

Picture: Even without Zirkzee, Amorim has an “unstoppable” Academy ace up his sleeve for Europa League decider – opinion
Manchester United’s season rides on Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final second leg tie and Joshua Zirkzee’s injury could not have come at a worse time.
The Dutchman was starting to shine under Ruben Amorim but as The Peoples Person relayed, he will be missing the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury.
That effectively means the head coach only has Rasmus Hojlund as his sole striking option and the Dane’s form does not inspire confidence.
On top of that Amad remains sidelined while Alejandro Garnacho’s form has also fallen off a cliff. The Portuguese tactician could do with more attacking help.
Limp Attack
Unfortunately, one player who could have turned the tide is Academy wonderkid Chido Obi but he is ineligible to represent the Red Devils in Europe this season.
However, another Carrington graduate has the chance to step up on Thursday and he has already shown how capable he is for the academy.
The 18-year-old Gabriele Biancheri has been on fire for the youth team, netting 20 goals while also registering five assists from only 19 starts across all competitions.

This includes eight goals for the reserves and 12 for the U18s. The Welsh U19 international can not only play up top but also wide on the left and has proven to be “unstoppable” this season.
Biancheri’s chance to shine?
His goalscoring prowess has clearly caught Amorim’s eye and the former Cardiff starlet was called up for the first-team training a day before the game.
Physicality might be an issue but his speed, technique and eye for goal make him a unique talent. He remains the best bet as a late substitute among the other options in the squad currently and it will not be surprising if Amorim includes him in the matchday squad.
Biancheri has had to bide his time, watching on as Chido Obi overtook him in the pecking order as the ex-Arsenal starlet made his first-team debut before him.
But Thursday could be finally be his chance to shine. United fans have prepared something special and every member of the squad needs to pull together to make it a night to remember for the club.

Video: Ruben Amorim responds to Rory McIlroy’s comments on United after historic Masters success
Ruben Amorim has sent a message to Manchester United fan and golfing star Rory McIlroy after his incredible victory at The Masters last weekend.
The Northern Irishman completed a historic grand slam with his win at Augusta, becoming just the sixth player to achieve the feat in the sport.
McIlroy was asked about United in his post-tournament press conferences and the 35-year-old hopes his success could rub off on Amorim’s side in what remains of the season.
“If it can inspire some better play, absolutely,” he said.
Today, the United head coach responded to McIlroy’s comments, offering his congratulations and inviting the golf legend to Old Trafford to show off his prize and coveted green jacket.
The video was posted on X via United’s official page with Amorim speaking directly to the new Masters champion.

An open invite to a lifelong Red and latest winner of @TheMasters #MUFC
— Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 16, 2025
“Hi Rory. Congratulations for The Masters and I want to invite you to Old Trafford to show your trophy.
It is really important to us in this moment. You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible and we want that feeling in our stadium. So, I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet you,” he said.
Should he accept the calling, it will not be the first time McIlroy has paraded a trophy around the Theatre of Dreams after his win at The Open granted him a similar invitation just over a decade ago.
With only a handful of fixtures remaining at Old Trafford, McIlroy will have to be quick if he is to get in front of the United crowd before they draw a line under what has been a horrific season to date.
Amorim will be desperate for McIlroy’s success to rub off on his players in what remains of the Europa League, with the European competition the last hope of saving a disastrous campaign.
After a 2-2 draw in France last week, United welcome Lyon to Old Trafford for the crucial second leg tomorrow (Thursday), in a fight for a place in the semi final.
McIlroy will no doubt be joining the thousands of United fans getting behind Amorim and his side for the season defining encounter.
