Tactical analysis: United will breeze past Lyon in their Europa League clash if Amorim fixes these two key issues

The entire fate of Manchester United’s season is set to be determined tonight as they host Olympique Lyonnais for the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash.

Having exited both the League Cup and FA Cup while their Premier League campaign is all but over, the Europa League is Man United’s last chance at victory this season.

Still, they will need to be as vigilant as ever in order to come away with a vital win in front of the Old Trafford crowd, especially after what happened last time.

During the first leg, United made a valiant effort to come back from behind and take a 2-1 lead, with a crucial away win seeming all but guaranteed.

Sadly, it was just seconds before the final whistle that Lyon equalised, five minutes into stoppage time.

To rub salt in the wounds, it was a goal that could have been completely avoided if Andre Onana caught the initial shot or at least didn’t parry the ball into the pathway of another attacker just metres ahead of the goal line.

During their 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Newcastle United on Sunday, United showed another poor lapse in concentration. Following what was a decent first-half showing that saw them draw level at 1-1, Ruben Amorim’s team yet again fell behind just four minutes after the half-time break. At that moment, the team capitulated, letting in another two goals before the final whistle.

But it wasn’t just lapses in concentration that have let United down in recent times – it was also explicit goalkeeping errors. Much like Onana in the first leg against Lyon, Bayindir suffered a howler against Newcastle, rolling the ball straight to the opposition and conceding as a result.

This shows that United are suffering something of a goalkeeping crisis. This makes one question what goalkeeping coaches Craig Mawson and Jorge Vital are teaching their players in training, especially since so many errors seem to persist week in and week out.

While Newcastle have emerged as a fearsome force at the top level of football, the mistakes made against Lyon in the first leg were what led to United’s downfall.

Both of Lyon’s goals on the night could have been prevented by a more consistent goalkeeper, and it appeared that for large portions of the night, the French side struggled to penetrate against United’s low press.

On the attacking front, United appear to be rediscovering their momentum after a brief goal drought.

Joshua Zirkzee showed how lethal he can be when in the right position during the Lyon draw, while Alejandro Garnacho scored a rare goal against Newcastle, finally finding the back of the net after firing countless shots off target this season. Of course, Bruno Fernandes is a reliable source for goals, arguably emerging as United’s most consistent performer this campaign.

If the first leg clash was indicative of anything, it’s that United are fully capable of defeating Lyon. They have the build-up play and the attacking threat. All that is needed is more goalkeeping awareness and for Amorim’s men to maintain their focus for the full 90 minutes plus stoppage time.

Should United manage to tighten up at the back and ensure that their focus remains in check, Amorim’s men should make quick work of Lyon in front of the Old Trafford crowd this evening. The Europa League semi-finals are calling.

Onana’s do or die moment, unbeaten run: what United fans are talking about ahead of tonight’s Europa League clash

Manchester United take on Olympique Lyonnais tonight, looking to advance to the semi-final of the Europa League.

After the match in France was tied 2-2 , United need a win of any kind to keep their chances of finishing the season with a trophy alive.

The Red Devils have played the French side six times in European history.

They have never lost. There have been three victories and three draws in total.

Here are three storylines to look forward to this evening.

United looking to extend unbeaten run

Whilst the Red Devils have been poor in the league, they have won six and drawn five of their 11 Europa League matches.

According to The BBC, “the last time the Red Devils began a European campaign unbeaten across their opening 11 matches they eventually went on to lose 3-1 in the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League final against Barcelona.”

A win or draw tonight would extend this fine record.

The Red Devils also have a good record against French sides at home, if not recently. “Manchester United have lost each of their last two home European games against sides from France, 0-2 and 1-3 vs Paris Saint-Germain in February 2019 and December 2020.”

Nonetheless, before these two games, they were unbeaten in 14 matches between 1965 and 2017, winning ten and drawing four.

Lyon will be no pushovers

While United worked hard to get a 2-2 draw in France, especially after falling a goal behind, the French side are no pushovers on their travels.

“Lyon are unbeaten across their last 12 away UEFA Europa League games, winning nine and drawing three, since a 1-0 defeat to Atalanta in December 2017.”

What’s more, they also have a strong recent record against English sides as they have lost just one of their most recent nine games in European competition.

They have won four and drawn four, with their only defeat coming against West Ham United in the 2021/2022 Conference League.

Andre Onana’s last chance

Onana made the headlines before and after the first leg match last week. Prior to the game, he claimed that United were much better than Lyon and got into a war of words with Nemanja Matic.

The Cameroonian went on to make two horror mistakes in the match and was dropped from the squad to face Newcastle United in the league last weekend.

Nonetheless, Ruben Amorim has claimed that Onana will definitely start the game at Old Trafford tonight.

The 29 year old will be grateful for the opportunity to redeem himself but he will know that a poor performance tonight could soon cost him his United career as fans’ patience has run very thin with him after two calamitous seasons in red.

Victor Osimhen breaks silence on rumours about his future, it could be great news for United

Manchester United target Victor Osimhen has claimed that he will not make a decision on his future until the end of the season.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, having failed time and time again to put the ball in the back of the net in the Premier League.

United have been linked to forwards such Benjamin Sesko, Liam Delap and Matheus Cunha to fill the gaps.

One name that has not gone away however, is that of Galatasaray’s on-loan star Osimhen.

Ruben Amorim’s side are said to be in “pole position” to sign the 26 year old as Chelsea have reportedly left the race for him.

In addition, SSC Napoli are prepared to offer United the player at a discount so that he is kept out of reach of their Serie A rivals, Juventus.

Nonetheless, 90 Min carry comments from Osimhen that state he is not yet ready to make a decision on his next club.

Commenting on his future he stated, “a decision will be made at the end of the season about what will be best for everyone. Galatasaray will forever be in my heart.”

The fact that no decision will be made until the end of the season could be good news for United. If they win the Europa League, they will be in a much stronger position to sign the Nigerian.

Elaborating on his time in Istanbul he claimed, “there are always rumours about me, of course, but I prefer to live in the moment.”

“I am enjoying myself right now; I am enjoying both the club and my life here. The fans have also been incredibly supportive since the first day.”

The Nigerian international has bagged 29 goals in 33 matches for the Turks this season.

He also has much still to achieve this season as Galatasaray are only three points ahead of Fenerbahce in the league with seven games to go and are also in the semi-final of the cup where they will face Konyaspor.
