Video: “A massive positive”: Gary Neville gives shock verdict on Bournemouth bludgeoning

Former Manchester United player Gary Neville has hammered the current state of his old club and the players who represent it.

Speaking to Sky Sports after another horror show of a performance as they were dismantled 3-0 by AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford for a second season in a row, he lambasted what had become of the club.

United will now spend Christmas in the bottom half of the Premier League for the first time ever.

Neville was bullish when asked about the game and surprisingly commented, “I think it’s a massive positive that Ruben Amorim is seeing what he’s got.”

“In the past, there have been times where you can be kidded into thinking you have got a better group of players, because of decent results and moving up the league. But they are a mile away in every single way.”

Neville then claimed that he believes that Amorim will have to make some tactical adjustments to his favoured 3-4-3 formation.

“He’s given everyone a try by rotating the team and I do not think there will be many he’s watched and thought, ‘yes, I want you on the bus’.”

“They are all very mediocre, and I don’t know how it’s happened – they are better than what they are showing, let’s be clear. But it’s a pattern.”

The former United man did praise the Cherries for their fantastic work but really focused on the fact that Amorim “can look at these players in the cold light of day.”

He spoke of the need for a “cultural overhaul” at the club and they are experiencing a really “torrid time”.

Neville laid into the current group of players claiming that there is not a great deal to like about how they perform or play the game.

“They are not good enough to play for Manchester United, because this club aims to be at the top. It’s quite clear.”

With things so clearly going wrong at the club, all eyes will be on what they try and do in the January window to salvage what they can of a horrendous season to date.

United planning post-season Asia trip that could net INEOS £10m, could take huge toll on players – report

Manchester United are already planning for once the current season ends and it involves a trip to Malaysia which could net the club up to £10 million.

Any earnings from the post-season tour is likely to help with both PSR and FFP rules but considering an exhaustive pre-season tour of the US to come, it might be the players that suffer the most.

Both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle had taken their squads on post-season tours to Australia only three days after the Premier League season ended.

As per The Daily Star, United, who are struggling to comply with the Profit and Sustainability rules, are yet to confirm the trip with talks still ongoing with the organisers.

Post-season trip

“Manchester United are planning to go on a post-season trip to Malaysia, that will raise further concerns about player welfare.

“United bosses are plotting the trip at the end of this season, in a move that could earn them up to £10m.

“But with United also expected to travel to the United States in the summer for a pre-season tour, it remains to be seen what toll a long journey to Malaysia could have on the squad.

“It also helps them comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations, as well as UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules. United have not confirmed the possible trip to Malaysia, but said talks with organisers were ongoing.”

Pros and cons

It is well-known that INEOS have been on a cost-cutting spree since they became co-owners, inducing 250 job cuts, raising ticket prices, clamping down on staff expenses to even canceling season festivities.

So while they might be edging towards accepting, the players and head coach might say otherwise. Former manager Erik ten Hag had complained about additional travel which hampered training, something Ruben Amorim will want to avoid.

Players have complained of workload in the past and a to-and-fro flight to Kuala Lumpur is 27 hours and almost 14,000 miles, something that must be factored in especially after a gruelling season.

With an extensive pre-season tour of the US to come, will it be worth the hassle? INEOS will take the final call.

Ex-United coach reveals insane reason why Ten Hag constantly overlooked Amad Diallo

Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has revealed why Erik ten Hag constantly overlooked Amad Diallo.

McCarthy – who joined United in the summer of 2022 – primarily worked with forward players and so had a good understanding of Ten Hag’s thought process when selecting his attackers.

For some parts of last season and this term before his sacking, Ten Hag became unpopular within a section of the fanbase for failing to give Amad more minutes.

The Dutch coach constantly demonstrated a preference for other options in wide areas including Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.

Even though he’d impress during the limited playing time he was afforded, it just seemed like Amad could never really break into the first team.

Ten Hag’s decision to regularly overlook Amad has been made to look even more ridiculous courtesy of the Ivorian’s exploits under Ruben Amorim.

Amad has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford and at the moment, the 22-year-old is almost certainly one of the first names on the team sheet.

Speaking on the Podcast and Chill Network, McCarthy was asked why Ten Hag didn’t fancy Amad during his stint in the United dugout.

McCarthy responded, “Tactically, when we set up, the manager felt that Antony was the best, better player for the job that he wanted because he knew Antony from Ajax. He was his player, so he invested in him, and the club supported him.”

“So, of course, he had to support the player that he bought, I think that’s why he persisted in playing Antony. It’s because he knew the capabilities when Antony was at his best.”

“And then you had [Alejandro] Garnacho who was also playing well, scoring goals. [Marcus] Rashford, on any given day, could demolish anyone.”

McCarthy added, “And then you’ve got [Rasmus] Hojlund, you spend £70m on bringing him in, so he has to play.”

“So someone’s gotta [miss out], and unfortunately for Amad, the manager goes with the player he thinks is probably more capable for, for those type of games tactically, defensively and attacking.”

Amad has registered 11 direct goal involvements in his last 11 appearances across all competitions.

Amorim issues response as United set new unwanted PL record in humiliating loss to Bournemouth

Manchester United’s struggles with defending set pieces carried on, as they slipped to a devastating loss at the hands of Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

Bournemouth won 3-0 at United for the second season running to leave United in 13th position in the Premier League table. This is the first time United have spent Christmas in the bottom half of the table since 1989/90.

United conceded from a set piece for the seventh time in the last six games for Bournemouth’s first goal as Dean Huijsen guided home a first-half free-kick.

The Cherries went on to complete the victory through a Justin Kluivert penalty and Antoine Semenyo’s strike in quick succession after the break.

Amorim – who has endured a dismal start to life at Old Trafford after losing four of his first nine games in charge – said he is responsible for United’s set-piece problems.

Lisandro Martinez also admitted that the team’s vulnerabilities in defending set pieces contributed to their defeat against Bournemouth.

The Mirror points out that United have now shipped a staggering 17 set-piece goals of the calendar year, setting a new unwanted record for them in the Premier League era.

Huijsen’s headed finish has statistically made it the worst year for the Red Devils when it comes to defending set pieces in more than 30 years.

When asked about this damning statistic, Amorim remarked [via ESPN], “We are working on that and we are going to improve on that.”

“But we didn’t lose because of set pieces. We lose because we create more chances and we didn’t score and then in this moment everything is against us and they can score.”

“Like against Tottenham, we create chances also. It’s a difficult moment.”

During warm-ups before matches, United have been regularly spotted lining up and defending set pieces but their efforts currently don’t seem to be bearing fruit.

United are back in action on Boxing Day when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium.

Video: More humiliation for United after loss to Bournemouth as Amorim’s presser is interrupted by leaking roof

Ruben Amorim’s post-match press conference after Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth was interrupted by a leak in the ceiling.

United crashed to the devastating loss courtesy of goals from Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo.

The result has left United languishing in 13th place in the Premier League standings – their lowest league position on Christmas Day since 1989/90.

The United players were jeered off the pitch at the final whistle by fans who had not departed the stadium.

As Amorim answered questions from journalists following the defeat, things went from bad to worse as the press conference was disrupted by a leaking roof.

Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst posted a video on X showing this.

BBC’s Simon Stone revealed that water was dripping down on the front row of journalists, forcing him to switch seats.

Old Trafford has gained a somewhat embarrassing reputation for struggling to keep water out during rainy matches.

Earlier this year, clips emerged online showing seats drenched after a meeting with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was at Old Trafford for that game.

Remedial works were conducted and according to MEN, United sources privately admitted that “some parts of the stadium struggled to cope.”

It’s understood that Ratcliffe created an Old Trafford task force to look into such issues.

United have just finished consulting fans over the redevelopment of Old Trafford and a final decision – either on refurbishment or the construction of a new arena – is expected to be made next year.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Boxing Day when they make their way to the Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers.

0 crosses, 0 dribbles, 0 ground duels won: This United star has been average for a long time now and needs time off

Manchester United succumbed to yet another 0-3 loss at the hands of Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, staying in the bottom half of the Premier League table at Christmas for the first time.

Ruben Amorim’s system has shown it works as seen from the impressive Manchester derby win but he lacks the correct personnel with the team massively lacking in consistency.

The head coach’s decision to sub off Manuel Ugarte in the second half allowed the Cherries to build momentum but the lack of quality out wide really hurt the hosts.

Amorim had explained earlier that Diogo Dalot is more suited to the right wingback role rather than playing on the opposite flank, where he has been forced to play due to injury reasons.

Dalot was poor vs Cherries

On Sunday, the coach opted to start Tyrell Malacia on the left against Andoni Iraola’s team to give Dalot the chance to shine in his favoured position.

The Portuguese full-back was average to say the least on the right, and was non-existent when he was shifted back to the left side.

He ended the game with a passing accuracy of 75 percent, poor from a wingback who hardly affected the game in an attacking sense.

He managed zero crosses, while failing to complete even one dribble. To make matters worse, the Portuguese lost possession 13 times (all stats via sofascore).

Last season, Dalot had three goals and five assists. This season he has zero, which shows how ineffective he has been moving forwards. He has two assists this term but his last assist came back in October.

Dalot needs a rest

He was poor defensively as well, failing to win a single ground duel while he was dribbled past once. He did complete two clearances and managed one interception.

The coach’s system needs players who can attack and defend with gusto, but the 25-year-old has failed in both aspects so far this campaign.

Many have pointed to the lack of rest for Dalot which has contributed to his poor showings off late but until United can recruit someone, he is likely to keep playing on the left with Luke Shaw out injured and Malacia struggling for form.

Amorim ideally needs wingers in that position instead of ineffective full-backs. INEOS need to help him in January but will they?
