United could miss out on England international as Saudi side prepare to make their move – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United’s loss to Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday served as a reminder to INEOS about how fragile the team’s attack remains.

Last season Erik ten Hag was forced to rely exclusively on Rasmus Hojlund due to the injury troubles of Anthony Martial while Marcus Rashford remained off-colour throughout the campaign.

The Dane’s pre-season injury meant the Mancunian was tasked with trying to provide the breakthrough at Wembley but he ended up squandering a couple of easy chances as the Red Devils lost 7-6 on penalties.

Joshua Zirkzee was signed in the summer but is yet to become match-fit and did not appear against Pep Guardiola’s team. It would be unwise for the Dutch boss to depend too much on the Netherlands international in his debut campaign in red.

Striker shortage

That is why there have been calls to strengthen upfront with Evan Ferguson of Brighton recently linked with a move while the club have also internally discussed the possibility of going after Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But the Premier League star who has the best chance of earning a move to Old Trafford is Ivan Toney of Brentford, who has thus far refused to sign a new deal.

The Bees’ earlier asking price was beyond United’s reach but it is coming down dramatically and if it does reduce further, the 20-time English league champions could go after him.

— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 11, 2024

But Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the England international is attracting plenty of interest from the Saudi Pro League with Al Ahli watching him closely since January.

“Ivan Toney, one of the main strikers being considered by Saudi Pro League clubs for the final weeks of the window,” Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Toney’s future

“Toney, appreciated by Al Ahli already since last January window and he’s still on SPL shortlist. No decision on player side, he’s assessing options.”

It is well known that the Englishman is asking for massive wages from his potential suitors and a move to the Middle East guarantees a fat paycheck.

But the striker might want to test himself at a bigger club and there are a lot of clubs in England who are interested.

Whether United can join that bandwagon remains to be seen. If it has to materialise, a lot of sales will be required with INEOS struggling on that front so far.

“It looks like it”: Sporting director of European giants expecting United to announce major signings

Manchester United are edging closer to finalising the transfers of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, suggests Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl.

Saturday was a frustrating one for United fans, as the Red Devils lost the Community Shield showdown 7-6 on penalties despite producing an encouraging performance against Manchester City at Wembley.

However, off the pitch, United seemingly managed to taste success, finding breakthrough in their talks to sign both De Ligt and Mazraoui from Bayern.

The Dutch centre-back is set to join United in a deal worth €45million, plus €5m in add-ons. He has agreed to sign a five-year contract with the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

Mazraoui, who is likely to replace West Ham United-bound Aaron Wan-Bissaka, will cost United €15m plus €5m in bonuses. Having now reached agreements with Bayern for both players, United are now working to wrap up their signings swiftly.

Amid an injury crisis at the back, Erik ten Hag was forced to rely on 36-year-old Jonny Evans against City. Lisandro Martinez, meanwhile, was shifted to the left flank in the absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

United are scheduled to face Fulham on Friday. As such, they do not have much time left to register both players to ensure they are available for selection for the Premier League opener.

In that regard, Bayern’s sporting director has suggested United fans will not have to wait too long to see both players in red shirts.

According to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Eberl “expects” the transfer of the Bayern duo to Old Trafford to be “finalised soon”.

Max Eberl expects the transfers of Matthijs #DeLigt and Noussair #Mazraoui to #MUFC to be finalized soon

The Bayern boss on whether there will be an announcement shortly:

As reported: Flight to Manchester and medical booked for Monday.

When asked if there would be an announcement shortly, Eberly stated: “It looks like it!”

Meanwhile, Plettenberg reports that flight to Manchester and medicals have been booked for Monday.

In De Ligt and Mazraoui, who both enjoyed plenty of success at Ajax under Ten Hag, the United gaffer is getting technically proficient players who are well aware of his philosophy and style of play and are truly capable of pushing the backline higher up the field.

United “still in contact” with 29-yo defensive lynchpin who prefers Old Trafford move the most – report

Manchester United are reportedly still in talks with former Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso, who now considers Old Trafford his preferred next transfer destination.

Rejuvenating the defensive department was a key priority for United heading into the ongoing summer transfer window. Already, the Red Devils secured the signing of Leny Yoro from Lille in a deal worth around £52m including add-ons.

Over the weekend, the reliable David Ornstein revealed that United also reached an agreement with Bayern Munich over the transfer fee for Matthijs de Ligt. A medical for De Ligt has been scheduled to take place in the next 24 hours, ahead of a reunion in England with Erik ten Hag.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United were alerted to the opportunity to secure the services of yet another top defender, this time on a free – Hermoso.

It was stated that Hermoso – a five-time Spain international – was in “official contacts” with Ten Hag’s side, with the player looking for a three-year deal that would net him a salary of €6 million gross.

The report noted that negotiations were in the “initial phase” and nothing was advanced.

On Saturday, the reliable Fabrizio Romano said that Hermoso was discussed as an option at United.

Mario Hermoso has been discussed as option at Manchester United, still available as free agent after leaving Atlético.

…but understand Man United next priority is still Noussair Mazraoui deal after selling AWB to West Ham.

— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 10, 2024

Journalist Máximo de la Cruz Ramírez Ramírez has now given an update and indicated that United’s proposal is the one that currently appeals the most to the 29-year-old.

“The proposal to be able to play in Manchester United is the one that the former Atlético de Madrid player, Mario Hermoso, likes the most.”

“The club and the player are still in contact, but nothing has been done yet.”

“This week there will surely be some news, both good and bad.”

It’s however unlikely that United will bring in Hermoso even as they close in on officially adding De Ligt to their ranks.

Now that two central defenders have been acquired, it seems to safe say that United will turn their attention towards acquiring a midfielder.

Nevertheless, a swoop for the Spain international can’t be entirely ruled out, especially because according to Romano, United may still make two more signings even after landing De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

Romano told GIVEMESPORT, “I told you, Man United are going to attack the market. Man United want to sign at least three more, could be four, and now we have the two players they wanted. Mazraoui and De Ligt to Manchester United is here we go, because the deal is done with Bayern.”

“And we have to mention that Manchester United have been successful in negotiations, because they closed the deal as they wanted. Probably the timing was longer than expected, but it was worth it for Manchester United, because they always wanted to include add-ons in both negotiations.”

It’s certainly one for fans to keep a close eye on and how it develops.

Rio Ferdinand says recent United arrival who’s an “absolute devil” can help misfiring star turn a corner

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has insisted that Ruud van Nistelrooy can help Marcus Rashford return to his best even as the 2024/25 Premier League season draws closer.

Van Nistelrooy was added to Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff earlier this summer as part of INEOS’ reshuffle of United’s coaching set-up.

The former striker seems to already be having an impact at United, with stars like Joe Hugill, Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton waxing lyrical about his influence and tactical prowess.

Ex-Red Devils defender Ferdinand spoke on his YouTube channel and remarked that Van Nistelrooy can play a huge role in helping Rashford find his best form in front of goal.

Rashford endured a horrid 2023/24 season, in which he only registered eight goals across all competitions. The campaign before, the Englishman plundered a career-high 30 goals.

Ferdinand said, “Our forwards – I want to see them learning from Ruud.”

“Ruud van Nistelrooy was an absolute devil in the box.”

“He was a monster. He was an obsessive, aggressive, ruthless individual. I think Marcus, I think he can be shown that by someone like Ruud. I think that’s the job of someone like Ruud.”

“He’s [Van Nistelrooy] gonna do other things for the team but I think he should be honing in on some individuals like Rashford, saying – ‘you had a season like last season, so let’s not have the same again.”

“These are the conversations that should be going on. I’m hoping they’re going on. I like to see that Marcus will be going: ‘Yeah, yeah, I’m there. Whatever Ruud’s saying, I’m in.’”

Ferdinand also had something to say about Bruno Fernandes, who played in the false nine position against Manchester City in the Community Shield loss on Saturday.

According to the six-time Premier League winner, going forward United should seek to restore Fernandes to his natural playmaking role where he can “hurt teams” and freely deliver balls into the final third.

Are Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt match fit for Man United?

Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui are expected to complete transfers to Manchester United today.

The pair are both undergoing medicals ahead of a switch from Bayern Munich.

It will represent a tremendous boost for United’s defence, which has been decimated in recent times.

Raphael Varane left at the end of last season and his replacement, Leny Yoro, fractured a metatarsal in a pre-season friendly, ruling him out until November.

Meanwhile Luke Shaw is still battling with persistent injury problems and was again not available for the Red Devils in Saturday’s Community Shield.

His understudy, Tyrell Malacia, has not kicked a ball since the 2022/23 season and is still several weeks away from match fitness.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, meanwhile, is expected to complete a transfer to West Ham today.

Harry Maguire is also touch and go for Friday’s Premier League opener against Fulham after picking up a knock on Saturday, while Victor Lindelof missed that game and is doubtful for the next match.

This leaves Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and 36-year-old Jonny Evans as the only fit senior defenders going into the new season.

United fans are therefore immediately wondering about the match fitness of the incoming pair and questioning whether they could be available for Friday’s game if the deals go through in time.

The fact is that both will be well short of fitness. Neither has had much of a pre-season.

De Ligt was in the Netherlands squad for Euro 24 but did not play a minute of the tournament. The last time he saw action was on June 6th, playing 72 minutes for the Dutch against Canada.

Mazraoui also has had limited game time. He played 24 minutes from the bench in a friendly against Düren on July 24th and 22 minutes against Spurs on 3rd August.

Both were unused subs against Spurs this Saturday.

United will no doubt arrange a behind-closed-doors friendly between now and Friday to get some minutes in both players’ legs, but in truth it seems unlikely either will be deemed able to start the game.

This leaves manager Erik ten Hag sweating on the fitness of Maguire, Lindelof and Shaw, with the new boys ideally coming on for 30 minutes or so in the second half.

— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 12, 2024

The pair are expected to join the club today, having already agreed personal terms.

It represents a fantastic conclusion to weeks of negotiation with the Bundesliga giants over both players.

United turned to De Ligt after talks to bring Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite to the club broke down, with the Toffees refusing to budge on their £70 million valuation. He has fallen out of favour in Munich and is seen as surplus to requirements by Vincent Kompany.

Both stars played under United manager Erik ten Hag when he was head coach of Ajax, so they will be familiar with his methods and systems.

With another new arrival, Joshua Zirkzee, a product of the Feyenoord youth system, the contingent of United stars who have played in the Netherlands is now vast.

The trio will join Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount and Antony and coaches Ruud van Nistelrooy, René Hake and Jelle ten Rouwelaar in having played or coached in both leagues.

De Ligt’s transfer fee is €45 million plus €5 million in variables, whereas Mazraoui’s is €15 million plus €5 million in variables.

Both are being offered five year deals with one year optional extensions.

If all goes to plan and work permits are received, both should be eligible for Friday’s Premier League opener against Fulham.

However, as explained in more detail here, neither player has had much of a pre-season, so it would be surprising if they were deemed fit enough to play.

Mazraoui, 26, is perhaps the more likely to start against the Cottagers as United struggle to find any fit full-backs for the match.

Luke Shaw missed the Community Shield with injury, Tyrell Malacia is still two months away from being match ready and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is in London completing his own medical ahead of a move to West Ham.

If Shaw is not fit, Mazraoui may be pushed into immediate action at right back, with Diogo Dalot moving over to the left.

United set to hold crucial transfer meeting today, injured star’s exit to also be discussed – report

Manchester United are all set to announce two new signings but are already planning for further additions which might require the club to move on established stars.

The Red Devils acted decisively in the early weeks of the summer window as they quickly snapped up Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and Lille’s Leny Yoro but since then, have been rather quiet.

A deal for Manuel Ugarte has not materialised due to their inability to move on Casemiro and it seemed like the deal for Noussair Mazraoui could also run into problems following complications with regards to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s exit to West Ham.

But the move seems to be back on with the Moroccan and Matthijs de Ligt on their way to Manchester for their respective medicals.

Transfer meeting

INEOS are not done according to The Daily Mail and a transfer meeting is planned on Monday where the hierarchy will discuss not only future incomings but also player sales.

One player whose exit will be discussed is Victor Lindelof. The Swede hardly played in pre-season due to injury and did not appear in the Community Shield against Manchester City with Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire starting instead.

The 30-year-old has slowly become quite injury-prone in recent years, missing 22 games last term. His performance levels have also dipped as a result.

With Leny Yoro and De Ligt joining, United are open to letting the Sweden international leave and he is attracting plenty of interest from abroad though his wage demands have made it difficult for potential suitors.

Some sort of compromise will be needed to move on the former Benfica man this window with Maguire expected to stay put while the club are open to bringing in free agent Mario Hermoso as well.

Lindelof’s future

“United have also been offered free agent Mario Hermoso following his departure from Atletico Madrid and the club will hold another recruitment meeting today to discuss their next targets and who could yet leave with interest building in Victor Lindelof,” the report stated.

As far as further incomings are concerned, the 20-time English league champions are expected to add one or two midfielders with Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen attracting plenty of interest.

With Rasmus Hojlund injured and Joshua Zirkzee yet to gain match-fitness, another forward could be required but for that to happen, Jadon Sancho will need to be sold.

So far, not too many sides are in the race with Paris Saint-Germain also expected to move on after their proposed deal for Desire Doue close to completion.

PSG’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho takes unexpected twist, could decide his future – report

Paris Saint-Germain have won the race to sign French starlet Desire Doue and the move is likely to “end their pursuit” of Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho.

Doue, 19, emerged as one of the hottest prospects on the market this summer with a host of Europe’s elite clubs expressing an interest in the Stade Rennais academy graduate, including United. A report relayed by The Peoples Person in May revealed Old Trafford executives had “initiated contacts” with the Ligue 1 side over a potential move for Doue following extensive scouting by the recruitment department.

However, there was little progress on United’s pursuit of the French midfielder beyond these initial reports, with the primary focus at Old Trafford being from a defensive perspective, rather than an attacking one, outside of the deal to sign Joshua Zirzkee from Bologna.

Instead, it was two of the continent’s heavyweights – PSG and Bayern Munich – who quickly emerged at the front of the queue for Doue, with both teams seeing the 19-year-old as a key target for their squad overhauls this summer.

Initially, it had appeared Bayern were in the driving seat so sign Doue. The German club have already signed Michael Olise to play on their right-wing and wanted to replicate the Doue-Olise partnership which had helped the French national team light up the Olympics this past month.

In light of this, PSG were reported to being considering alternatives should their pursuit of Doue be unsuccessful; with one target being Sancho. And, as explained in greater detail here, PSG initiated talks with the United winger’s representatives, reaching an “agreement in principle” over a move.

United were open to selling the 24-year-old, but only at a set price. If this threshold was not met, the club were content to keep Sancho in Ten Hag’s squad this season following the successful mending of the pair’s broken relationship.

The transfer budget at Old Trafford has been an issue this summer, however, with United needing to sell players in order to fund further recruitment. If Sancho could have been sold for a significant fee – in the region of £40 million or more – it would have been a big boost to the club’s ability to sign a new midfielder or forward, as an example.

There was also significant interest from United in PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte but the French champion’s valuation has, so far, proved too costly for a deal to be agreed to sign the Uruguay international. A potential swap deal involving Sancho could have been one option which may have helped circumvent these issues over the transfer fee.

Which is why this latest update that PSG have trumped Bayern to agree a deal with Stade Rennais to sign Doue, as revealed by Fabrizio Romano, will come as a blow to the Red Devils.

Not only is an elite talent they have been tracking for many months no longer on the market, his signing will also be likely to prevent his new club from pursuing a deal to sign Sancho.

Tweet: “Désiré Doué will become new Paris Saint-Germain player, no doubts after decision made yesterday night. Bayern are already out of the race as they never got any agreement or final green light. PSG will get formal steps done.”

The saving grace from the deal for Doue is it will further increase the pressure on PSG to sell Ugarte following two blockbuster transfers (Doue and Joao Neves) with the French club likely to be needing sales to help balance the books.

Video: Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui fly in for Man United medicals

Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt are on their way to England to complete a double transfer to Manchester United.

The pair were both filmed at Munich airport, as relayed by Sky Germany reporter, Florian Plettenberg.

Presumably they are sharing a private jet, as De Ligt said to a reporter “Noussair is waiting for me!” as he arrived.

United clinched the double deal with Bayern Munich on Saturday after weeks of negotiation. The combined fee for the pair is €60 million (£51.3m) plus up to €10 million (£8.56m) in bonuses.

It seems like a fantastic piece of business for co-owners Ineos.

Mazaraoui is being bought for half his market value of €30 million, and De Ligt for less than 2/3rds his, as per transfermarkt.com.

What’s more, Bayern have agreed to spread the payments for both players out over three years, meaning the outlay for 2024/25 will only be £20 million.

If both medicals are passed, with personal terms already fully agreed, both signings could be completed today.

United will then have to get work permits organised and in theory, both players could be available for selection against Fulham in Friday’s Premier League opener.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is heading out of Old Trafford, with his deal to West Ham also expected to be completed today, making room for Mazraoui.

His fee will be £15 million, more than Mazraoui, and making this year’s net spend on today’s outs and ins only £5 million, absolutely brilliant business by Ineos.

United star set to complete transfer to PL rivals today after overcoming last-minute doubts – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to become a West Ham United player today.

On Saturday news broke that a £15 million deal had been agreed between the two clubs for the transfer of the right back and that personal terms had been agreed.

Wan-Bissaka was expected to head to the London Stadium for a medical yesterday, however, a last-minute hitch developed and he did not travel.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported that “Wan-Bissaka remains in Manchester this evening, however, with certain issues between the player and clubs yet to be finalised.

“There is optimism at Old Trafford and the London Stadium that the switch will still happen, but Manchester United are relaxed if it does not.”

This put United’s deal for his replacement, Noussair Mazraoui, in jeopardy.

However, whatever the issues were, they seemed to be resolved late last night.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano posted “Aaron Wan-Bissaka will become West Ham player on Monday, no doubts.

“Deal will happen, same for Mazraoui to Manchester United.”
