“A sign of destiny:” one last hurdle stands in the way of United midfielder’s departure for Napoli – report

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is edging close to the exit doors at Old Trafford if recent reports prove correct.

A long-time subject of transfer rumours, McTominay has long been expected to leave United as he struggles to earn minutes under manager Erik ten Hag. Once a fixture in the starting 11, the Scottish midfielder is now frequently used as a substitute, with the likes of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo clearly taking preference.

This summer, McTominay was strongly linked with a move to Fulham. Earlier this week, it was reported that Fulham were willing to meet United’s asking price of £30 million for McTominay, however, it appears that the club has since made a u-turn on the deal after sensing that the player was not keen to join them.

After signing Sander Berge from Burnley, the Cottagers no longer appear to be in need of McTominay’s services.

Fortunately for United, another suitor has since shown interest in McTominay, namely Napoli.

This morning, Italian sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport reported that the Serie A club remain highly interested in the United midfielder, with internal discussions under way.

“In Castel Volturno, in recent days, there has been a lot of talk about Scott McTominay, the big target for the midfield, the one who would ideally guarantee a turning point,” the newspaper reported.

Still, even with such interest in McTominay, there appears to be one last hurdle that stands in the way of his transfer to the Italian giants – namely, a financial one.

“Without the sale of Osimhen it will be very difficult to satisfy United’s requests,” the article continued. Still, the newspaper expressed hope that a compromise between the clubs could indeed be reached, particularly as United look to complete some transfers of their own before the deadline.

“In Manchester, however, Manu Ugarte is about to arrive from PSG. And with him the need to reduce the squad: maybe it’s a sign of destiny.”

Yesterday, The Peoples Person discussed the disparity between United’s asking price for McTominay and what Napoli are willing to spend.

While United were quick to reject Fulham’s bid for McTominay on the grounds that £20 million was too low, Napoli were said to only be willing to spend €20 million, even less when converted to British pounds.

But while Osimhen’s sale could boost Napoli’s spending power, Ugarte’s arrival at Old Trafford could convince United to part ways with McTominay for less even as a means of recovering some transfer funds and freeing up their wage bill, providing hope that a deal can be reached.
