Ten Hag will be “gone by Christmas” for this simple reason, says United treble winner

Former Manchester United treble winner Teddy Sheringham has lambasted Erik ten Hag’s performance as manager and claims he will have lost his job by Christmas.

Despite a positive first season, many fans had grown tired of Ten Hag’s excuses and chaotic style of football after an eighth place finish in the league and an embarrassing Champions League campaign last season.

A shock FA Cup victory allowed him to keep his position over the summer but two defeats in a row have heaped the pressure right back on the former Ajax manager.

The dire performance in the 0-3 home defeat to Liverpool has damaged much of the good feeling left over from the FA Cup final and sources close to the club feel if things do not start changing soon, Ten Hag will find his job very much on the line.

Former United striker Teddy Sheringham has subsequently had his say on the manager and has given a damning account of his record.

Speaking at a Ladbrokes event via The Sun and The Mirror, the former England international claimed, “when you’re finishing eighth in the Premier League, that’s quite clearly not good enough, for Man United.”

“Full stop. End of story, for me. You’ve got to change what’s going on.”

“When you look at the inconsistency of last season, and that has followed on, without a shadow of the doubt in the first three games of this season… you can see there’s been no change whatsoever.”

Sheringham did admit that there are new players but this has not resulted in any change of philosophy.

Whilst claiming he did not like to see people lose their jobs, the treble winner made his thoughts on Ten Hag’s future crystal clear.

“It’s not nice to say that people shouldn’t be in certain positions, but he shouldn’t be there. It’s not good enough for Man United. They’ve fallen way below the expectancy levels, and to think that it’s alright to finish eighth… it’s just wrong.”

Sheringham then gave his view when the axe would fall on the manager and he stated, “do I think the manager will be there at the end of the season? No, I don’t. I think he’ll be gone by Christmas.”

The former Tottenham striker also took aim at the type of players that United are signing, claiming that they might be good players but they aren’t the type of signings to take the club to the next level.

He bemoaned United’s lack of involvement in the race for both Harry Kane and Declan Rice and claimed Ten Hag has made a mistake bringing in Matthijs de Ligt.

“All these players that they keep signing… you know, [Matthijs] de Ligt: OK, he might be a nice player, but they’ve got Harry Maguire there, who can do a very similar job. It’s just like, what are you doing? What are you buying?”
