4-2-3-1: Mount, Ugarte and Hojlund start as Ten Hag rings the changes vs FC Twente – prediction

Erik ten Hag is likely to rotate his Manchester United side against FC Twente in the Europa League tonight with one eye on a tougher series of fixtures ahead.

United face Spurs at Old Trafford on Sunday before travelling to Porto on the following Thursday, returning for a trip to Villa Park the following Sunday.

He will want his squad full and firing for those games, so he will most likely field a side tonight that is experienced and capable of delivering a safe result while at the same time getting some players back to match fitness while resting others.

He may choose to give Altay Bayindir another game in goal, but it’s a close call. We think Ten Hag might play safe and keep his first choice man, Andre Onana, between the sticks.

Likewise, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui could, and perhaps should, be offered a rest, but with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia still injured there is little back up at full back, so we expect them to continue.

It’s almost certain young Harry Amass won’t be drafted in at left back as he played the full 90 minutes in the U21’s EFL Trophy victory over Doncaster Rovers yesterday.

Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans could substitute for Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez. Victor Lindelof is back in training but it is likely to be too soon for him.

Ten Hag’s preferred midfield partnership at the moment is Kobbie Mainoo and Christian Eriksen, so they could also be rested. Casemiro could return and it seems likely Manuel Ugarte starts as he works his way toward full match fitness.

Young Toby Collyer could also be involved as he did not feature for the U21’s yesterday.

Marcus Rashford was rested against Crystal Palace, so should return on the left and there may be another chance for Antony on the right, with Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo both rested.

Mason Mount is back from injury and needs minutes, so he could deputise for Bruno Fernandes. Likewise, Rasmus Hojlund needs a game after missing the start of the season with injury, so he could start up front, with Josh Zirkzee taking a break.

Another youngster hoping to make the step up, Ethan Wheatley, also played yesterday and did not have the best of games. So he, too, is unlikely to be involved.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for tonight’s 8pm kick off:
