100% aerial duels, 6/7 ground duels, 4 tackles: United star repaid Ten Hag’s faith with near-flawless display vs. Villa

Manchester United and Aston Villa played out a 0-0 draw at Villa Park on Sunday.

While United snatched a point on extremely hostile grounds, they never looked like scoring, considering they didn’t create nearly enough chances.

So far this term, United have scored just five Premier League goals – their fewest in the opening seven games of a single season in their Premier League history.

United have also failed to find the back of the net in their last three top-flight matches, a run of 308 minutes without a goal.

Against Villa, the Red Devils had 45% possession to their opponent’s 55% share of the ball. Erik ten Hag’s men managed four shots on target from their total 10 cracks at goal.

Villa on the other hand managed 11 total shots but tested Andre Onana only once.

United put together 356 passes with a success rate of 81%. Villa strung 412 passes with a pass completion of 82%.

One of the Reds’ best performers was Jonny Evans. Evans was a surprise inclusion in the starting XI, as he partnered Harry Maguire at the heart of the club’s defence.

The Northern Irishman made three clearances and blocked one shot. He also put in four tackles.

He delved into seven ground duels, winning six of them. He contested five challenges in the air and came out on top all five times.

The veteran defender had 54 touches of the ball to his name and successfully managed to find his teammates with 36 of the 42 passes he attempted (86% pass accuracy).

The 36-year-old pinged four long balls but connected just once.

He fired a shot, but it was off-target.

Evans certainly proved that he still has a lot to offer United moving forward.
